A fun way to help your kids reading and comprehension is to give them interesting subjects to read about. Students will read 3 fun short stories from topics in science and history. This helps students learn to love reading, all the while they are practicing and building their skills. This 1:1 class will provide your student an opportunity to read aloud in class, allowing the teacher to help them as needed. Students will answer 5 comprehension questions about the story they read. Next, the student will write 1-2 paragraphs about their favorite story from class using the writing prompt. We will use the a google doc, (students will be provided a link to) to have the student type up their answer to the writing prompt question. The teacher helps give guidance on their writing, including grammar, punctuation, spelling. These would be considered short essay type writing assignments. (NOTE: typing is preferred as I can offer more feedback in students writing and better able to see their writing, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and so on in typed essays than in written essays.) This class is meant to be 1:1 to provide the help that students need in both reading and writing. NOTE: This class is set as 45 minutes, but not all student need the whole time to complete the three stories and writing assignment. But I have this set as 45 minutes for those student who do need this much time to not feel rushed in completing the class assignments. This makes it manageable for all students. There are 15 weeks of stories at this level, and will repeat every 15 weeks. Students will be provided a copy of the story and questions in the classroom weekly. Weekly Topics: Week 1: Why do skunks smell bad? Why do clowns go to school? Week 2: Why do people yawn? Who was the first woman doctor in the United States? How do horses run? Week 3: How have zoos changed? What is a walking stick? How long have people used pencils? Week 4: What is a flying fox? Do you know what to do in a fire? Where does lightning go? Week 5: Are stamps used only for the mail? What is in a camel’s hump? When was ice cream first made? Week 6: What is the smallest bird in the world? How did yo-yo’s get their start? Can horses dance? Week 7: What were the first tall buildings? Where does salt come from? What is the Gateway Arch? Week 8: How do frogs grow? What is a falling star? Week 9: Who made the first jeans? How are tulips different from other flowers? Who was Arthur Ashe? Week 10: How is maple syrup made? Where did the first woman vote? What is a jellyfish? Week 11: What is a ghost town? Is there a dog that does not bark? What did Louis Braille do? Week 12: How do whales talk? How did Annie Oakley become famous? Why can cockroaches live almost anywhere? Week 13 What is origami? How does a starfish see? Can an owl move its eyes? Week 14 Has the American flag always been red, white and blue? What are ant cows? Why did Abraham Lincoln grow a beard? Week 15 Can a fish cough? I am a veteran homeschool mom of 20+ years. I have a Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning with Technology. In my years of experience I have taught kids reading through personalized help mostly on a 1 on 1 basis customized to what best fits their learning style. I believe not all kids fit in one mold and different approaches need to be made to help each student move forward and succeed in their education.
