This class will cover the types of anxiety and the ways each person experiences feelings differently. We will learn coping mechanisms, practice useful communication skills, and students will have the chance to vent and dump whatever is on their mind. Examining the underlying beliefs that fuel the anxiety can be extremely helpful so that we can reconfigure the beliefs and manage the anxiety. We will also learn and practice communication skills to make interactions with friends and family easier and healthier. This is a safe space, judgement-free zone. Class is tailored and personalized to meet students at any age level or comfort level. Class 1: Intro and icebreakers. Brain parts and functions. How do they affect anxiety? Covering the limbic system, frontal lobe, and brain stem. Navy Seal Box Breathing Method and Five-Finger Breathing Class 2: 4 F's "fight, flight, freeze, fawn" and helping students identify which one they are, then covering multiple coping mechanisms to regulate each one. Class 3: Text-taking anxiety skills and the "stress bucket." Class 4: Time management: Skills covered this week are the Pomodoro timer, eat the frog, time blocking, and the Eisenhower Matrix. With anxiety, it can be hard to keep track of time unless we learn to externalize it! Class 5: Emotional regulation: Covering anger management and stress reduction. Class 6: Circle of control. Establishing healthy boundaries and what to do if these boundaries are crossed. Class 7: The 6 areas of wellness and making sure we stay balanced to reduce everyday stress. Class 8: The parasympathetic system, how to turn it on and off. (Big word! Not a very hard concept to master though!) The vagus nerve. What is it? Where is it? How does it affect anxiety? Class 9: 6 Ways to deal with uncertainty. Class 10: Building blocks of well-being called the PERMA model: Positive emotions, engagement (with a project, for instance), positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishment/achievement. (There are other models, but this is the one we cover in this class.) Class 11: Goal setting and vision boards. Rewiring the brain! Setting goals and breaking bad habits. (Get to see the brain rewire itself in a video posted from the University of California, San Francisco.) Class 12: The four main "happy" chemicals: Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins, can contribute to feelings of happiness. Tips and tricks on how to achieve each one! --> We will end each class with a "Be, act, think" prompt card. This class is designed to be educational and is not intended to medically treat, diagnose, or replace therapy.

I am 2 months away from having my degree in child psychology and development, specializing in social anxiety and mental health. I've already completed all the counseling technique classes and just wrapping up electives at this point. The goal of this class is not to treat or diagnose students but to educate them on what anxiety is and how it can be managed.
