一對一輔導：閱讀理解入門：尋找意義

Can your child fluently read sentences? The next step of reading mastery is comprehension, which includes relating each sentence to prior passages and predicting upcoming information. I will not be teaching how to read, but how to find meaning in what is read. If a child is still struggling with reading, due to the 1-on-1 nature of this class, I can read the passages aloud, so that they can still work on these concepts and not fall behind in this important area. 
     I will use simple reading passages to teach beginning reading comprehension. Things like: inferring what will happen next, determining character traits, inferring the setting, making predictions and finding the main idea.
When students fail to determine the main ideas and details of what they read or don’t engage in close reading to identify the text structure, features, and language used by the author, they often become frustrated and disengage from activities and assignments because they don’t “get it”.
     Awareness of text structure, in particular, appears to improve comprehension of informational texts.
Imagine the struggle for students who can’t tell the difference between an informational passage that is comparing and contrasting with a passage that illustrates cause and effect or offers a problem and solution.
Students who are unable to read for meaning in the early grades may miss this window of opportunity to develop deeper reading skills that will be critical as they enter upper grades.
    Strategic approaches for developing early reading comprehension also correlate positively to writing growth. Building strong writing foundations allows children to begin to express their ideas and opinions and to connect the purposes of reading and writing.   

Here is a class list - though since the class is one-on-one concepts can be taught over multiple sessions when needed

Class 1:  Making Inferences
Class 2: Characterization
Class 3: Setting
Class 4: Predicting what will happen next
Class 5: Cause and effect
Class 6: Sequence of events

This is just the beginning. I will keep the list updated several weeks in advance. 

Once again, this class is not designed to teach children how to read, but how to find the meaning in what they read.
