作業
每週 4+ 小時. Homework and the time required to complete it will depend entirely on the tutoring/class topic, skills to be learned, and the age and ability of the learner. Independent reading time will depend on the length and type of works chosen and the speed at which the learner can read. These are issues and goals we can discuss in class.

課堂經歷

英語程度 - 未知
美國 6 - 12 年級
For tutoring or homework help, the material must be provided by the learner/adult along with background information on what skills are needed and a preference for the tutoring method or style. For both homework help and English instruction, the learner/adult must submit instructions at least 48 hours in advance. More time is a plus and helps me greatly.

I love the interesting, even exciting, learning strategies that I can use with English. I plan to use both traditional and nontraditional approaches. Depending on the family's preferences, I will teach grammar using a traditional approach (parts of speech, phrases, clauses, etc.) and embed these elements into reading and writing. I could also use a nontraditional approach such as the sentence pattern approach, where students imitate sentences written by fine writers and learn the grammar structures and conventions used. Learning vocabulary, with my teaching style, happens best through traditional writing and reading activities as well as more nontraditional activities and games. I want to teach traditional academic essays of all types as well as personal narratives and more creative pieces. I can teach basic sentences, paragraphs, multi-paragraph essays, or college-prep analyses or research papers. Whatever is needed.

When I teach a class, I usually begin with something that will draw the learner in and introduce the topic. During class I use slides, games, video clips, discussion, and teacher- and learner-led activities. Learners will decide on literary works or topics, unless the learner/adult wants me to choose. I prefer classic literature or excellent contemporary works and Young Adult fiction and nonfiction. Common Sense Media gives you an idea of content as well as any possible objectionable material. (If the learner/adult wants me to read a book I have not already read, please give me at least two weeks' advance notice.) I strive to keep the learner actively listening, speaking, writing, reading, or otherwise participating. At the end of class, we will summarize, review, assess, or talk about why our topic matters. We will also set goals.

Learners will need to be at a 6th-grade level or above in the topic we will address. It may help to think in terms of the transition between elementary school and middle school as a starting point.

****I am having major knee surgery Sept. 19. I feel I need at least 4 weeks to recover enough to get back to tutoring. For a full-course, I will take 2 weeks. Hopefully that will work, and we'll still get our semester in before Christmas.****

學習目標

One example of some learning goals may be instruction and progress in academic essays such as descriptive, analytical, persuasive and argumentative (there are differences), expository (eg. compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution, etc.), narrative, and textual analysis or interpretation. I would probably encourage and assess learners according to the six-trait method of writing: idea, organization, sentence fluency, voice, word choice, and conventions (grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, usage). Creative works also lend themselves to the six-trait writing system. Younger writers and more basic writing will likely focus on fewer than six traits. Rubrics will be provided.

I really believe that the above (see class description) nontraditional strategy for grammar is important for writing instruction as well--imitating the sentence patterns of great writers. Vocabulary will be taught in context as much as possible and will require a great deal of student participation with activities and games. A worthy goal would be to learn all the words presented and to know how to spell and use them in context. Literature brings a wealth of activities and discussion possibilities with it, and it can be a springboard for writing assignments, which will also be assessed according to the above six traits. Since most literary works are copyrighted, we must have the learners buy the book (or find it at the library) and read it at home. (I may be able to provide older, shorter works that are in the public domain.) I am limited in how much of a copyrighted text I can quote in class, but I will have numerous discussion aids and critical thinking activities for those who achieve the goal of reading what is assigned. We would be able to discuss a novel or nonfiction book a section at a time or discuss the entire work in one class period. For homework help, of course I will cover whatever you provide.

父母的引導和規範
We will deal with potentially upsetting class or literary content on a case by case basis, depending on what literature or topic is chosen. If I choose a work of literature, I am selective and will warn adults of any possible objectionable material or sensitive areas. A good aid for learning about the content of books is Common Sense Media found online.

Paper and pen or pencil, especially if the learner prefers to write by hand. I always encourage learners to take notes.
A second device such as a smartphone is sometimes helpful.
I will give specifics with each class.

Again, sources will be determined by the subject tutored. Therefore, I will list source material after each class presentation. With games I will try to supply the websites in advance.

I have a B.S. in English Education. I taught English at the middle-school and high-school levels for seven years. I also taught English to ESL students for three years. Common topics covered were basic writing, grammar, and vocabulary as well as academic writing. I taught a great deal of high-school academic writing because some young-adult learners were preparing to enter universities.

In addition, I have degrees (B.A. and M.A.) in Humanities and the full coursework of a Ph.D. in comparative literature (I had to quit without a dissertation for personal and family reasons). At the undergraduate level, I earned a minor in English Education. English and comparative literature fall under the umbrella of the humanities (see my profile video), and my degrees in Humanities were literature, writing, and vocabulary intensive. I've written, I'm sure, 100s of academic and other kinds of essays and papers.

Furthermore, I worked for ten years as an editor, either alongside my teaching or school work, or full-time at a book publishing company and as a freelancer. I also worked five years for an online editing company, either alongside my education or full-time. In my editing work, I gained a great deal of knowledge about the English language and writing. At the book company where I worked and as a freelancer, I was not just a copyeditor (fixes problems with the mechanics) but also a content editor and a writer. A content editor is concerned primarily with what is written and how something is written. I'm grateful for my degrees and my teaching and editing experience that have prepared me for Outschool teaching, which I hope to make the culmination of all I've done.

On a personal level, I belong to a writing group and a book club. For writing group we either have mini writing lessons, or we provide feedback to each other's writing. I always have some writing project going. In our book club, we read at least one book a month. We include both fiction and nonfiction works in our schedule. Our discussions are both fruitful and fun.

Lastly, I have experience in German (fluent), French, Spanish, and Russian. I believe learning a foreign language is one of the best ways to understand one's native language.
