課堂經歷

Piano is simply the most effective instrument for understanding musical concepts--basic and advanced. There is no substitute for the tactile and visual aids piano provides for understanding melody, harmony, rhythm, and how they all work together. Fundamentally, piano is a great instrument for any curious young student to begin learning music.

Private piano lessons are a great way to improve or begin your skills on the instrument. Whether you've been playing a little bit or are a complete beginner, I can help you. Students will learn how to read pitch and rhythm and practice technique and artistic expression.

I utilize a variety of approaches to instruction based on the age, ability, and interests of each student.

For the earliest beginners, I use traditional repertoire and method.
For students that are older and/or are already bringing some knowledge to the lesson, I like to include songs that students have a desire to play. I will ask students what songs they are interested in playing, and I'll arrange a version of the song that suits the ability of the student.
I believe in balancing between instructional method and repertoire books and modern repertoire that students are interested in. Some students have a strong desire to become excellent sight readers. With these students, I follow a specific leveled method that does require diligence and patience, but is very rewarding. Other students wish to learn about piano so they can understand more about harmony and theory. This kind of lesson will be structured around the kind of music this student is listening to. I like to allow their curiosity to drive the discussion and pace of the lesson.

I can help you reach your goals no matter what they are!

****Technological Tips for More Successful Lessons****
There is a setting called "Original Sound for Musicians" that should be activated--set to "ON"--for this class. It is automatically disabled unless turned on manually. Zoom defaults to cutting out background noise, but this also cancels out frequencies that allow us to hear the full spectrum of sound we need to hear instruments being played. When "Original Sound for Musicians" is turned ON, we can hear the music better.

If it's possible, arrange the camera to be set a 90 degree angle to the student and their keyboard/piano. This allows the teacher to see the student's posture, face, fingers, arm height, and overall position at the instrument.

Hello! I am a professional music educator and farmer living in Maine with my wife and three small children in the forest. After a long span of touring as a professional musician, I most recently spent several years as a music teacher in a diverse urban public school before transitioning my teaching online due to circumstances surrounding the pandemic. I now teach remote music classes exclusively, right here on Outschool! I am thrilled to serve students in a larger online network, through active and creative music education.

In nearly all of my general music classes, I help students cultivate or deepen fundamental musical skills that I believe we all need: perceiving and keeping the beat, moving meaningfully to music, and singing various song forms. Additionally, I expose my students to a wide range of culture through an authentic and diverse repertoire, including traditional, folk, and modern music from America and throughout the globe. Another critical component of my classes is active music-making with voice, percussion, and instrumentals. My classes range from learning construction vocabulary through song for preschoolers, to digital music production for savvy teenagers, to advanced improvisation for music scholars.

I am also an experienced composer and performer. I often take songs requested by students and transcribe the music so we can learn it together; I love a good transcription challenge. And, if I can't find a song that meets the needs or interests of my students, I'll write one for them! Classes, too!

I look forward to learning with you.
