1-On-1 Fourth Grade Math Tutoring With Mr. Dan Designed For All Students!  (Ages 9-10). 

This class offers a big welcome to learners of every background and capability. Whether you're shooting to get ahead of the class, stay up with the class or catch up in the class, these sessions were designed especially for you. Mr. Dan will show you how to master skills such as Fractions, Algebra, Numbers and Operations, Geometry, Measurement and Data, Statistics and Probability. 

If your child is not already getting A's, my goal is to increase your child's academic level by one whole letter grade within 9-12 weeks of tutoring. This will help their performance in math class and on tests. I'll also send parents word every week about what we have worked on. 

I believe when most people think of tutoring, they think of helping students with ongoing homework assignments. We'll be doing a lot of that, but we'll also help your student strengthen critical math skills . 

Our student's first homework assignment will be taking an assessment using IXL's famous algorithm. It's very precise. The assessment takes about 60 minutes and there's no pressure involved. We just want to find out what your child knows about 4th grade math. 

This will give me a very accurate idea of how your child is grasping every area of 4th grade math. As time goes by, the assessment automatically updates itself as the student advances so you can monitor their progress. 

As an example, they may score a 4.5 in Numbers and Operations showing them to be right between a fourth and fifth grade level. They may score higher or lower in other areas. For instance, a score of 4.1 in Fractions in the middle of the school year shows a need to concentrate in that area. Lots of scores above 4.5 show an opportunity to advance toward the next grade level and perhaps beyond.  

How is our lesson structured? First and foremost, it is important to know that I treat my students with utmost respect, patience and understanding. We might spend a couple of minutes talking about how the student's week is going and how they are doing in math class. Are they able to keep up with the class? Do they feel like they’re catching on to math concepts easily? 

Over the next five or ten minutes, we'll go over the homework I assigned to ensure we are all caught up before moving on to new material.

Then, we’ll get into the main stretch of the session, which might last 40 minutes. We’ll see if the student has any questions about current classroom homework and assignments. Often, this will be the material that makes up most of the tutoring session. 

Or we may go on to a new topic I have prepared in an area the student has shown the most need for growth in, whether already advanced in that area or not. In teaching and learning, the student will be as active as possible, providing as many of the answers as he or she can. The idea is to build autonomy and true understanding. 

In winding down we’ll take 5 minutes to talk about the future, and help a student set goals for the next week. This is also a time when parents may want to have some input or questions about the session. Of course, parents are always invited to attend the entirety of any tutoring  session.

It is my preference to assign about an hour of homework per week unless the parent is strongly opposed. I think it is essential for the most improvement.
