In this class, we will meet 70 times over the course of one school year. We will meet twice weekly for 55 minutes each time. This class is largely hands on, with many opportunities for projects and labs. Youth hoping to be equine science majors will develop a broad understanding of the horse as it relates to business, recreational, and production aspects of the industry. We will cover the following topics, but going at the pace of the class, spending as much time as is interested on any given topic. This means that it is possible not all topics will be covered during the year. Equine Physiology of body systems: In basic anatomical terms, the horse’s body is made up of skin, the musculoskeletal system, the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal system, the lymphatic system, the endocrine system, and the urinary system. Equine Biomechanics: focuses on teaching fundamental and advance principles of equine anatomy and biomechanics including the skeletar and muscular components of movement. This unit is designed as an in-depth study and analysis of these principles in relation to conformation, lameness, and gait quality for different disciplines. Equine Reproductive Physiology this unit will encompass the fundamentals of equine reproductive anatomy and physiology as a foundation for the understanding and utilization of that knowledge to study and become familiar with the care and management of the breeding stallion and the broodmare. Equine Evaluation Students will learn about and apply methods for evaluating conformation and function of performance and halter horses, soundness, breed standards, rules and regulations for evaluation, selection, and performance. Equine Production and Management Beginning field experience in animal production systems. May include health, nutrition, reproduction, management, processing, budgeting, and/or marketing exercises. Holistic Management Application of holistic management, a goal-oriented, value-driven framework for making ecologically, economically, and socially sound decisions. Holistic approach to management, especially of land-based resources, aimed toward greater biodiversity and sustainability. Comparative Equine Nutrition Advanced problem-based presentation of animal nutrition case studies. Emphasis on nutrients, clinical nutrition disorders and species not commonly considered in production animal nutrition. Analytical and problem-solving skills will be utilized to develop solutions to complex animal nutrition management issues. Rangeland Assessment and Planning for the Equine Industry Examination of methods used for determining the healthy and function of rangeland ecosystems, and the application of planning processes used in the management of rangelands and associated ecosystems. Theory and application of grassland and brushland assessment and monitoring practices for evaluating grazing use, wildlife habitat quality, and fuels condition, and general ecological health. Equine Breeding Project and Internship Procurement Skills Independent Research Project and Internship Procurement skills taught in the form of resume development, interview practice and determining the best internship for age and skillset. This class is the advanced and more indepth version of equine science. This class is best for juniors and seniors who intend to major in equine science, attend a trade school or go directly into the equine industry. It is suggested that learners have taken at least one prior equine science class of mine to know my teaching style and what is expected in my classes.
