수업 소개
Did you know the first computer programmer was a woman? Or that women have largely lead the way for the discipline of biology? How about the fact that women have historically completed a large proportion of complex mathematics, long before the days of calculators? In fact, these women were called "calculators" and "computers" themselves! Women have contributed so much to science in our society, but their stories go unsung. This class will seek to hear those stories, discuss what women have contributed to STEM, and discuss some of the reasons women have struggled to gain prominence in this regard throughout history. This class is an ongoing meeting for those who are interested in learning about and discussing the history of women within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in western society. Each week I will bring a new figure or specific area of interest to the table and provide some background information. We will learn about individual women, when they lived, what they contributed to STEM, the challenges they faced, and how they have helped to shape society as we know it today. We will then have the opportunity to discuss these individuals together as a group, reflect on what we are learning, and ask questions about these individuals and their contributions. We will utilize Nearpod in our classes to answer questions during class (Nearpod can be accessed at http://join.nearpod.com, and I will provide the code to join in class). This class is designed for any learners who are interested in learning more about women in STEM, how to support women in STEM, or who are themselves interested in entering STEM fields. This class will cover women from various fields of science through the school year, as listed below: 1. Astronomy (Week of January 12, 2025) 2. Biology (Week of January 19, 2025) 3. Botany (Week of January 26, 2025) 4. Mathematics (Week of February 2, 2025) 5. Computer Science (Week of February 9, 2025) 6. Nuclear Physics (Week of February 16, 2025) 7. Biochemistry (Week of February 23, 2025) 8. Space Exploration (Week of March 2, 2025) 9. Chemistry (Week of March 9, 2025) 10. Evolutionary Biology (Week of March 16, 2025) 11. Glacier and Ice Science (Week of March 23, 2025) 12. Oceanography (Week of March 30, 2025) 13. Engineering (Week of April 6, 2025) 14. Psychology (Week of April 13, 2025) 15.
