수업 소개

This class is a perfect fit for young poets, creative minds, and anyone who loves to play with words in a fun, engaging way. No prior poetry experience is needed—just bring your imagination and a love for laughter!

Like many of my other classes, this class is limited to a small group of 4 learners to ensure each child receives individual attention, has ample opportunities to participate, and feels supported in their learning journey.

CLASS STRUCTURE:

🌟Silly Sound Off - Students introduce themselves with a wacky twist to create a fun and supportive atmosphere.

🌟Read-Aloud & Act It Out - Listen to Shel Silverstein’s poems with dramatic flair. Read in wacky voices. Act out parts of the poem.

🌟Class Nonsense Poem - Collaborate on "Where OUR Sidewalk Ends", with each student adding a hilarious line.

🌟Wacky Illustration Challenge ("Doodle Like Shel") - Students receive a funny poem title and create a quick, zany illustration.

🌟Wrap-Up & Homework - Share favorite moments. Look ahead to the next session.

🌟Homework: Write a poem to match their illustration and refine their doodle for sharing next time.

TEACHING APPROACH:

I believe learning should be an adventure filled with creativity, movement, and laughter! My teaching style is highly engaging and interactive, encouraging students to explore poetry through dramatic expression, wacky voices, and imaginative play.

While I carefully plan each session to ensure a rich learning experience, I also remain adaptable—allowing learners’ energy, ideas, and creativity to shape the flow of the class. I foster a supportive environment where all learners feel comfortable participating at their own pace, whether that means speaking up, acting out, or sharing in the chat. I look forward to seeing how this class grows and evolves!

I wanted to take a moment to address a topic that occasionally arises in discussions about children’s literature—why certain books, including Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends, have been challenged or banned in some schools and libraries. Where the Sidewalk Ends is a beloved poetry collection that has been cherished by generations. Its playful, imaginative poems introduce children to the joy of language, wordplay, and storytelling. However, it has faced occasional challenges due to concerns over themes such as mischievous behavior, dark humor, and references to magic or mild language (e.g., heck). Some critics worry that certain poems might encourage disobedience or contain messages that they feel are inappropriate for young readers. While I always respect a parent’s right to guide their child’s reading choices, I also believe in fostering a love for literature and encouraging critical thinking. Where the Sidewalk Ends offers a wonderful opportunity for children to engage with poetry in a way that is fun, creative, and thought-provoking. Reading and discussing literature together can be a great way to address any concerns while also enjoying the magic of storytelling.

"Where the Sidewalk Ends" is the first poetry book that I fell in love with. I kept renewing it from the library until one day, the librarian told me to let someone else have turn reading it. I waited till he put it back on the shelf and I quickly went over, took the book and hid it behind all the other books on the shelf. Hoping that no one would find it. The following week, I checked it out again. Now, I do not condone doing this but this book fueled my love for reading and writing poetry. That love along with my enthusiasm for teaching have led to the creation of this class. And hopefully many more!
