In many ways, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), known in the United States more commonly as North Korea defies any attempts to be understandable to outsiders, particularly outsiders in the Capitalist United States. In this class, we will push back against that obfuscation. This survey class is designed to give students an understanding of the DPRK’s history and guiding philosophy and how the United States has interacted with it. With the DPRK appearing in the news like clockwork, it is important to be able to assess this complex, ever changing ,and ever the same, situation.
