This class can act as one year of homeschooling math, or it acts as a strong reinforcement for students who already have a math curriculum or want a continual math review My goals are to teach to the students' needs and encourage students while they learn these core concepts. I accomplish this through setting high expectations and making sure students feel seen and heard. Mistakes will be made, and that is okay! It is all part of the learning process. The method of teaching will be a mix of "I do, we do, you do" (which means I will be demonstrating the content first) and giving the students problems to try out on their own first. I often use questions to allow students to think critically without giving the answers away. I love student-to-student interaction and will be incorporating it as much as possible through online discussions. NOTE: Make-up days are available if the teacher is unable to attend class (this would be due only to an emergency/illness). Make-up days will be added as an extra week of classes at the end of the course. Times and days will be the same as the listed class times. Course Outline: Week 1 (Jan 21) - Introductions/Integer Operations We will be introducing ourselves and discussing classroom expectations. We will review and practice how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative numbers. Week 2 (Jan 28) - Distributive Property Walk through the process of distributing integers and variables to other integers and variables (polynomials). Week 3 (Feb 4) - Combining Like Terms Building upon the previous weeks' skills, students will identify and group like terms. We will cover what makes a term unique and use concrete examples to build conceptual understanding. Week 4 (Feb 11) - Solving One-Step Equations Learn the mechanics of solving a one-step equation. We go back to the basics to give students conceptual understanding of the strategies used to solve equations Week 5 (Feb 18) - Solving One-Step Equations (Word Problems) Students will be able to read word problems and construct an equation from the given information. Students will also be creating their own word problem and solving! Week 6 (Feb 25) - Solving Two-Step Equations We kick it up a notch this week to tackle two-step equations. Students will learn the optimal way to solve these types of problems. Week 7 (Mar 3) - Solving Two-Step Equations (Word Problems) Students will master the art of creating algebraic expressions from word problems. They will create their own word problem that requires a two-step solution. *Week of Mar 10 SPRING BREAK* Week 8 (Mar 17) - Solving Through Substitution Various examples will be given to students to demonstrate how to plug variables into expressions. The types of problems given this week will simultaneously serve as a review of the previous weeks. Week 9 (Mar 24) - Pythagorean Theorem This first section of Pythagorean Theorem will cover the reasoning behind why the formula works, the formula itself, and basic use of solving through substitution with the formula. Week 10 (Mar 31) - Pythagorean Theorem We will conclude our semester course through challenging Pythagorean Theorem problems that incorporate all of the previous weeks' content. Students' hard work will pay off as they use their refined math skills to solve these problems. *End of Semester 1* *Week of Apr 7 Mid-Course BREAK *Beginning of Semester 2* Week 11 (Apr 14) - Graph Basics We will be introducing ourselves and discussing classroom expectations. We will review/learn the basic parts of the coordinate plane. Students will familiarize themselves with plotting points, the quadrants, and identifying distance on a graph. Week 12 (Apr 21) - Proportional Relationships Students will use word problems to graph points on a line. We will observe what connecting those points indicates and how linear relationships can be helpful in the real world. (k=y/x) Week 13 (Apr 28) - Non-Proportional Relationships Building upon the previous weeks' skills, students will move into functions that have y-intercepts that do not equal zero. These will come from word problems. Students will see how they differ and are similar to proportional relationships. (y=mx+b) Week 14 (May 5) - Slope (part 1 of 2) This week we introduce slope as a core concept of this course. We discuss the meaning of slope, its uses, and how to find it on a graph, table, and equation. Week 15 (May 12) - Slope (part 2 of 2) For the second week of slope, students will go back to their proportional and non-proportional graphs to identify the slope of those graphs. We will cover new problems and have students graph new points using slope. Week 16 (May 19) - Forms of Linear Equations (part 1 of 2) Students learn the "tools" of working with linear equations. They learn about slope-intercept form, standard form, and point-slope form. Students will have to decide which form is appropriate to use with the given information. Week 17 (May 26) - Forms of Linear Equations (part 2 of 2) After learning the different forms of linear equations, students will spend time manipulating equations and gaining proficiency at using these forms. Week 18 (June 2) - Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Using our previous knowledge from the course, students will discover interesting facts about the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. They will identify the slopes of each and determine a rule based on their findings. Week 19 (June 9) - Distance on a Graph (part 1 of 2) Students will use their skills to find the distance on a graph. This will include plotting points and using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of diagonal lines. Week 20 (June 16) - Distance on a Graph (part 2 of 2) We will conclude our semester course by using the culmination of knowledge to answer complex problems concerning distance on a graph. Students will work together to solve these problems.

The courses I offer center around core math topics in pre-algebra and algebra. I like to focus on the important building blocks students need to master in middle school and early high school in order to succeed in high school and beyond. Some of these topics cover proportionality, equations, inequalities, basic geometry, algebraic expressions, and arithmetic.
I am a certified teacher for grades 4-8 math and have over four years of professional experience teaching math to students ranging from grades 3 to 12. I taught seventh grade math while getting my credentials and taught my first year of seventh grade math at an amazing school. Though I left full-time teaching when I became a mother in 2019, I have continued to pursue my passion for teaching math part-time via various platforms.
My philosophy that drives my teaching is that every student is a unique person who is worthy of my time. I have the patience to work with students who are struggling in math and the ability to push students who are naturally inclined towards math. My goals when working with students are to teach and encourage.
When I'm not teaching/tutoring I can be found snuggling my babies, spending quality time with friends and family, and playing disc golf with my wonderful husband.
