수업 소개
In this one-time class the learner will discover how to weave using simple natural materials as their loom! We'll be exploring, in an organic way, the design elements and principles of color, texture, space, balance and repetition as we weave. I'll be using natural sticks from a vine in my yard and yarn to demonstrate how to create a three dimensional form. Weaving with materials found in nature expands the learner's imagination and ideas as they're encouraged to look around their environment for what can be used for weaving. The creative process is at the core of my teaching method. My approach is a structured freedom one where we imagine, explore, discover and create in a way that encourages creative expression. Weaving, besides being a beautiful art form, is a wonderful way to reduce stress that includes tactile, sensory stimulation with the peaceful repetition of the simple over under weaving process. My goal as I teach is to always give the learner lots of encouragement and inspiration to nurture their own creative spirit! This one-time class includes a printed pdf that the learner can use as a reference as needed after watching the recording. I'm always happy to connect to answer questions and hope to see photos of the learner's finished work via our Outschool classroom messaging.

The learner will need age appropriate scissors to cut the yarn they'll be using, these don't need to be sharp. If the sticks chosen for the class need to be trimmed please assist your learner in trimming or sanding any sharp tips before they begin the class.

• 5 sticks the same size (approximately 8 inches or longer in length) These can be natural sticks from a vine, bush, tree etc.. or if those are not available, you might find sticks at a hobby shop or bamboo kabob sticks will also work if the sharp tip is sanded off. • yarn - as many colors as desired, you don’t need more than 4 or 5 yards total • tape (any kind that will briefly hold the sticks together in the beginning) • age appropriate scissors Optional – a pencil

I'm so thrilled to be part of this wonderful Outschool community! I'm a tapestry artist and art teacher. I teach the art of tapestry weaving, beginning through advanced levels.
I've been an art teacher for over 40 years. After graduating with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Murray State University, I continued my education to get an Early Childhood Development certificate at the University of Arizona then a K-12 teaching certificate. I continued developing my art practice in painting and tapestry weaving and created a studio where children could be free to create in an encouraging, rich environment of various media to explore. Over a span of 30+ years I welcomed children preschool through high school in my studio and taught drawing, painting, weaving, clay, papermaking and more. I also taught in the elementary schools, community college and summer art camp. I love seeing the creative spirits of students come alive, grow and flourish through experiences with art.
My teaching style is a structured freedom approach where I lead students to imagine, explore, discover and reflect. I provide the welcoming environment, materials, inspiration, techniques and skills along with kind encouragement as the student flourishes in discovering their creativity!
My artwork begins with simple encounters in nature and watercolor sketches. I dye the linen and silk threads for my tapestries using botanical dyes, mostly from the flowers and plants in my garden then create tapestries that tell stories through abstract, symbolic, impressionistic imagery about the light, color and joy I find in nature.
When I'm not creating art, I love visiting my children and grandchildren, gardening, being out in nature, especially at sunrise and sunset and kayaking with my husband!
