Intermediate school students are right in the middle of learning how to read in elementary school and taking on complex texts in high school. The key to their success is a strong reading and writing vocabulary! Equip them for this upcoming challenge by adding a variety of advanced words to their middle school vocabulary words.

Expanding vocabulary through explicit, multifaceted vocabulary instruction strengthens reading comprehension, oral conversational fluency, and improves performance on classroom and standardized tests. 

Here is a glimpse of some of the vocabulary words we study in this class: 
-adjacent, manipulate, tentative, cache
-catastrophe, nomad, unanimous, malicious
-violate, abound, confiscate, scrutinize
-dawdle, hasten, evade, ambiguous
-pristine, rant, zeal, censure, dexterity 

This course is designed for intermediate learners in grades 4, 5 and 6 including English as a Second Language learners to master new vocabulary terms that appear on standardized assessments and in the texts they are reading. Improving vocabulary through explicit, multifaceted vocabulary instruction strengthens reading comprehension, oral conversational fluency, and improves performance on classroom and standardized tests. Learners will engage with 6 new, CHALLENGING vocabulary words each week.  

My effective teaching method, Connect-Apply-Extend-Repeat-Draw, engages learners and activates their brains. The TEN learning modalities used when teaching each new word are listed below. 

Learners will:
👀 look at a visual representation of the word
💬 verbally read each word aloud
✍ write each new word (in their notebook and/or by annotating directly on the screen)
🔨 break words down into prefixes, suffixes, root words, and syllables 
📚 identify synonyms and antonyms of each word
🎯 make connections to the words and themselves and their experiences
👓 identify critical attributes of each word
📝 make up sentences using the words 
🎨 draw a sketch to represent the words 
🎬 Connect the word to real life scenario
 
This multifaceted approach to explicit vocabulary instruction supports learners in building a deep understanding of these new words. 

Building a strong vocabulary is one of the KEYS to strong reading comprehension. It's difficult for learners to understand a text if they don't know what the words mean, especially as they encounter non-fiction texts with content specific vocabulary. Research shows the more words students know, the better they can comprehend text. Many learners need explicit vocabulary instruction to learn and master new vocabulary words and to connect those words to their prior knowledge.
