Welcome to SRS Music & STEAM! Our mission is to bring the wonder of music to your learners. Our curriculum focuses on developing a joy for music and enjoyment of your instrument. We also share connections between music and STEAM concepts including computer science, design thinking, math, and more!
Curriculum is individualized and learner-driven. This means that we work with parents and learners to select music genres and skills that will keep our students interested and help them meet their goals. We hope to foster lifelong learning and enjoyment of playing your instrument.
We offer 1:1 private instruction for beginning-advanced violin, fiddle, viola, cello, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and piano students. For beginners, we focus on developing good posture, playing technique, and tone. Listening and playing by ear is as important as learning to sight read. Over time, we introduce music theory and reading at the learner's pace. This comes from a combination of classical techniques and fiddle tunes. Our advanced learners enjoy setting their own playing and practice goals, building repertoire, and developing advanced playing techniques.
Music is a social activity too! We offer group classes for beginners through advancing players as well as themed classes for music appreciation, fiddle, or seasonal tunes. We also offer classes that incorporate music and science or coding concepts. Our group classes are 6 or fewer learners at a time. This gives everyone plenty of teacher attention and a chance to interact. Our learners love building a community of like-minded musicians.

Brett Kretzer has been a professional musician for over 11 years. His primary focus is on mandolin and Bluegrass and Americana genres. He has played music his whole life. When he graduated high school, he decided to get a BA in Audio Production with additional studies in music history and music theory at The Art Institute of TN-Nashville. After graduating, he worked in the field as an audio engineer for a couple of years before realizing his true passion: to create and perform acoustic music.
Bluegrass and Old Time quickly became Brett's favorite genres to play because of the accessibility and joy of playing with others – minimal equipment needed (although he loves all genres of music). Over the past decade, Brett has toured up and down the east coast, playing over 1000 shows. During that time he gained a ton of musical wisdom from mentors, fellow musicians, and the experience of playing on the road.
Brett's teaching style is dedicated to helping students gain musical freedom in playing both solo and with others. I focus on by-ear methods while using tablature for reference and first-time exposure to new songs. Students will learn to recognize musical themes on the fly and have the confidence to play without the need for sheet music or any other reference. In addition, they’ll become proficient in music theory and chart reading. My primary instrument is the mandolin, but he is an experienced guitarist and loves to teach guitar as well.

He also founded the West Virginia Wesleyan Appalachian ensemble and taught music theory, ear training, music history, and general education courses in music appreciation. Chris is a talented educator who makes learning music fun and accessible for students of all ages and skill levels.
