History Herald: U.S. American History for Young Historians 7-10 Part 2

In this multi-day course, little historians will travel back in time to learn about the events and people that shaped United States history from the late 1800's through the today- Imperialism, World Wars, Great Depression, Cold War, Civil Rights & More!

- Each class will be a historical adventure tailored to the little minds of the students.

- We will work through fun, interactive presentations and activities that will inspire and engage the little future historians.

- The content given will be pure historical fact, however, it will be delivered in age appropriate ways.

- Each week, students will be sent a handout to help fill in the information as we learn.
- Students are encouraged to color and draw in class so art supplies are a great addition to help students engage with the content.

The class schedule:

Week One- European Immigration and Urbanization: In this session, we will look at the effects of a growing U.S. with the rise of people coming from Europe and the difficult conditions that occurred in cities.

Week Two- American Expansion and Imperialism: We will investigate how the United States continued to expand, but this time it did so overseas in new places around the world. We will explore imperialism, its causes, and its effects.

Week Three- WWI: We will uncover what WWI was, how it happened, and the role of the US in the conflict. We will look at the new technology that made this was so devastating, and we will connect this to the ideas of imperialism discussed in the previous class.

Week Four- Roaring Twenties: We will investigate this period of economic boom that facilitated cultural change like the right to vote for women, the Great Migration, and the Harlem Renaissance.

Week Five- The Great Depression and the New Deal: We will investigate the economic collapse, the main sources of the collapse, and the effects of the Great Depression on the United States. We will also look at some the ways that FDR helped revive the United States through his New Deal.

Week Six- World War II: We will look into the main causes of WWII, the Holocaust, and the role of the US in the war.

Week Seven & Eight- The Civil Rights Movement: For this period, we will investigate the inequality within the United States for minorities, the fight to gain that equality, and key leaders of the movement such as Martin Luther King, Jr and Rosa Parks.

Week Nine- The Cold War: During this week, students will be led through an interactive class that will explain what the Cold War was and the effects of the war on the US and world for over 50 years.

Week Ten- The Vietnam War: In this class, students will work to understand the Vietnam War, the reasons for engagement, and the effect it had on the Vietnamese people and the culture of the U.S.

Week Eleven- The 80's and 90's: Students will investigate a few of the big moments in U.S. history during this period such as Regan and the Berlin War.

Week Twelve- The 2000's to Today: Students will investigate a few of the big moments in U.S. history during this period and connect the class events to the idea of a global community and working together to create a safe place for everyone.

- Each week, students will receive an overview of the event and the historical people involved.

- They will be provided with a historical "snapshot" handout that they will use to record the important information while working through the various activities presented in class. They are encouraged to bring crayons, markers, pencils, or any other writing materials to class!

- Students will leave class with a solid understanding of the event and people as well as the effects that it/they had on future events in the United States.

For the past decade, I have been encouraging students through education and personal development to explore the challenges of the past. Through my own personal education and professional development, I create a safe environment for students to learn about challenging topics of the past. My undergraduate is in history, focusing on United States and European integration, past cultures, and empire. My first master's degree is in education with a focus on English/Language Arts and History. My second master's degree is in history with a focus on world empires and United States/Europe during the premodern era and modern era. I am currently pursuing my PhD in history focusing on immigration and relations with indigenous peoples and cultures.
I have taught Ancient Civilizations in World History classes as well as classes on the history of Africa, Asia, and Australia, Ancient and Medieval Europe, and Early American history. I have taken and taught classes on world religions and practices starting with the ancient traditions of prehistoric cultures through modern day transitions of religions such as druidism. I have also taught about episodes of religious hysteria such as the Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials. I also teach classes on the myths and legends that have defined these cultures. This extensive background will be utilized to create a well-rounded and thorough explanation of the topic.
