This novel study summer camp will provides a powerful and thought-provoking perspective on the life of Melody, a young girl with cerebral palsy in the book Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. 

By studying this book, students will have the chance to discuss important topics like:
Disability and Ability: Understanding that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has unique strengths and qualities that make them valuable.

Empathy and Compassion: Learning how to see the world from someone else's perspective, and how we can be supportive and inclusive.

Overcoming Obstacles: Recognizing the power of perseverance and the impact of determination in overcoming life's challenges.

Focus: Making personal and world connections. Applying known information with text evidence to analyze characters, theme, and plot. Attention to metaphors/similes and vocabulary development. There will be an essay where students are expected to develop their ideas in-depth, providing detailed explanations, examples, and support for their points

Social Studies Enrichment:
Students will also learn about historical and contemporary figures alongside that demonstrate Equity and Resilience. By studying the lives and contributions of these individuals, students can explore the broader societal issues related to disability rights, advocacy, and inclusion. (Key studies not limited to, Temple Grandin, Stevie Wonder, and Bethany Hamilton)

This course will meet Monday-Friday. Friday will be an optional day to play games related to the weeks topic and work on any assignments.
