📝 Students will learn a vocabulary word and how to use it in a sentence, implement a "word attack" strategy to decode unfamiliar words, and participate in a proofreading activity involving spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation errors.

🎯 The goal of this class is for students to feel comfortable jumping into the ongoing version of the very popular ongoing class, "Daily Skills Practice With Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Grammar: Ages 7-9", or the version for Ages 10-12. 

The ongoing version of this class meets five days a week and has been running successfully for over two years. This one-time class is being offered to address feedback from parents about how to make the first day of class run more smoothly for new learners. This trial class allows students to understand the flow of the class, get acquainted with the teacher and her teaching style, sample the class content, and become familiar with using the annotate tool in Zoom that is highly recommended for a great experience in the ongoing version of the class. 

📖 Students in this one-time class will interact with all three of the daily activities that are in the ongoing class. Learners will experience the same class format and content as the ongoing class (please see the detailed description of the ongoing class below as a reference). The only difference between this class and the ongoing class is that the teacher will take more time explaining how to participate in class, how to make the most of each daily session of the ongoing class, and how to use the annotate tool appropriately for the best classroom experience. 

The class content is leveled the same as the ongoing class for Ages 7-9. It is still highly recommended for students considering the 10-12 class because the main goal of this one-time class is to understand how the class works, how to participate effectively, and to get a feel for the teacher's style. Students will also be introduced to the terms used in the word attack strategies which is important for both levels of the class. 

👀 For reference, below is the class description for the ONGOING class, which covers the same content, activities, and presentation style as this one-time class. Please feel free to reach out about any aspect of either this trial class or the ongoing class described below. 

🌟  Your child will spend 20 minutes every day Monday-Friday practicing reading, spelling, and grammar skills and adding a new vocabulary word to their written and spoken vocabulary.

🕰  Breakdown of each 20-minute live class session:

      📖  Reading practice: During each class meeting, students will be presented with multi-syllable words to decode. Students will use Zoom's annotate feature to mark where syllables are and where there are instances of multiple letters representing one sound. The goal of this activity is for students to become masters of breaking longer words down into smaller, more manageable parts. Each student will choose words to decode. Students may opt to watch and take notes on how the words are broken down rather than annotating on screen. This word attack process is modeled at the beginning of every class period so that students know what is expected of them. 

     📝  Vocabulary and Spelling: During this part of our daily meeting, a new vocabulary word will be introduced and students will discuss how they could use it in their written and spoken language. Students will learn how to spell it by using phonemic awareness. 

Optional homework activity: Students may post their own creative sentences on the classroom page daily, using the word of the day.

     🖊 Grammar and usage practice: Students will use the annotate feature to proofread sentences with spelling, grammar, and usage errors. Students may opt to write the corrected sentences on their own paper or whiteboard, then check their work as screen annotation is occurring. 

Students can expect to have microphones on and will be encouraged to participate in discussions.  I respect each child's learning style so I only call on volunteers unless specifically asked by the parent to encourage participation.
