Students in this class will learn nearly all of the C3 State Standards for Social Studies in this age group. Lesson in this class are highly interactive and hands-on, meant to ignite students' excitement for Geography and the world around them. Though the class may vary on how quickly we get through each lesson, an approximate outline is listed below. Geography isn't just about where a person lives. It is how and why a person lives there and what is the person's culture like because of it. This Geography class identifies all of these areas. Week One: THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY: describe where they live using the 5 themes of geography MAPS: construct a map of their neighborhood construct a map of a fictional island using landform find the distance between two points using a map scale complete a scavenger hunt on Google Earth for Carmen San Diego Week Two: CULTURE: connect their culture and the foods they eat after watching a video about the Northwest Native People's connection to Salmon identify the effects of immigration on America's culture take on the role of a real life American immigrant and share that immigrant's story Week Three: SPATIAL PATTERNS AND MOVEMENT: create a concept map on the effects of the Erie Canal discover how geography and international events both played a role in America's Westward Expansion in the 1800s GLOBAL INTERCONNECTIONS: watch a video on the 1930s drought and consider its effects worldwide complete a report on a country outside of North America find connections between the country they researched and the countries their classmates researched .
