In this one time class, the learner and me will discuss the meaning of the first chapter of this classic literary novel.

I will ask the learner to determine who the narrator is and who the old man is.

I will ask the learner to tell me about the setting of the novel that they will determine from what is written about the location of the story.

I will ask the learner to describe the old man and tell me what his profession is.

I will ask the learner to tell me what they know about Dr Livesey and his effect on the old man. 

We will discuss the meaning of the sea shanty and various words such as assizes and the phrase “terrible at sea”.

The class will be a discussion between me and the learner, with me giving information and prompting the learner to go further with their understanding of the chapter.

No previous knowledge is needed.
