In this 6-week class, we will read and discuss the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We will meet 2 times a week. This class will be taught with the use of Canva Slides and discussion. During each class, we will read the book aloud, answer reading comprehension questions, and discuss how various literary devices and figurative language are used in the book. We will also analyze the characters, setting, plot, and themes. My teaching style is student-centered and discussion-based. We will read most of the book in class, but students may need to finish reading the chapter outside of class. Class Agenda 5 minutes: Greeting & Warm Up Discussion Question Related to Book Chapter 35 minutes: Read the text, complete reading comprehension activities, and discussion 5 minutes: Recap of Key Information & Explanation of Optional Extension Activity 5 minutes: Closing & Goodbyes Students will need a copy of the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton to participate in this class. You may read a physical copy or digital version. Audiobooks can also be helpful to some learners when we need to finish reading chapters outside of class.

The Outsiders deals with gang violence, fighting, rebellion, peer pressure, and social issues related to socioeconomic status. The story includes fights, a fatal stabbing, a suicide, grieving the loss of friends, drinking alcohol underage, drunkenness, a few mentions of sexual activity, and serious injury as a result of a fire.
