In this one-time writing class, learners will explore the power of a strong topic sentence also known as "the hook" to grab a reader's attention and set the tone for their writing.

We’ll begin with a quick warm-up and discussion on why sentence starters matter. Then, using visuals, games, and real examples, students will learn four types of exciting sentence starters:

Learners will participate in “Hook Fixer” challenges where we rewrite boring openers into bold ones, and they’ll work on crafting their own attention-grabbing topic sentences based on fun, age-appropriate prompts. I will guide students through the process step-by-step and provide encouragement and suggestions along the way.

My teaching style is energetic, supportive, and interactive. I use visuals, real-time discussion, on-screen slides, and mini-games to keep students engaged and learning. Students will have multiple opportunities to share their ideas verbally or in the Zoom chat, though participation is always at their comfort level.

This class is designed to be a fun, confidence-building experience that gives students practical tools they can use in school or creative writing. No prior writing experience is needed, just a willingness to learn and have fun!
