In this one-time class, we will read "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson. Julia Donaldson is also the author of Room on the Broom! This is a fun story about a clever mouse. Before, during, and after the book I will ask students questions and engage in discussions with them about what they think will happen, and why they think that. Students will learn about the parts of a book. Students will practice pre-reading skills such as reading from left to right and top to bottom. Students will understand words represent a spoken word and convey a message. Students will answer simple questions about the story. Students will describe elements in a story, for example, characters and/or setting (time, place, and/or environment).
*1 brown paper plate (I suggest using a white paper plate and painting or coloring the back brown before class) *2 orange paper circles (1 1/2-2 inches in diameter) *1 green pom pom *white construction paper (for the horns and teeth) *brown construction paper (for the ears) *pink construction paper (for the ears) *black marker (for the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth) *glue *scissors
