In this class, students will compete against themselves and others to see how many points they can score by answering social studies questions about our seven continents. Questions will include topical geography, political boundaries (countries and cities) and basic information about size, populations, flora, and fauna and economy. The class structured resembles the game show Jeopardy, but students need not answer in the form of a question. I will facilitate the game. I will begin by explaining rules: 1. Wait for your turn, 2. Only one chance to answer a given question, 3. No helping another student, 4. Be a good sport, 5. Each question answered incorrectly will go back into the game to be revisited by another player. The winner will receive a certificate of championship. All others will receive a certificate of honorable mention. The certificates will be personalized and posted in the classroom within 24 hours after class. As a teacher, I am warm and encouraging. When a child is struggling, I like to give reassurance and help the child understand what is expected. In this class, I will explain wrong answers after the second attempt to answer is incorrect. This helps children learn more about the targeted subject. I will include a list of videos, article and or books on the topic in the description, so a child can prepare beforehand if they choose to do so. This encourages self study, an essential life-long learning habit. Since this class is a âgame showâ format, interaction is between learners and teacher, and with one another, is implied and used. Use of a camera is necessary. Students who are off camera, will not be allowed to participate as reactions, expressions, and attention are all part of this format. Parents must allow students to answer questions on their own. I am comfortable with parents sitting off camera to encourage or control younger learners. All students may join if they have interest in the topic. For students who just wish to test their existing knowledge in a fun way, this is it! For kids who want to learn more about this topic, they can use the pre-reading, previewing list to help learn more and prepare for our game. The idea of interpersonal competition is not stressed; rather, children are encouraged to do their own personal best and given encouragement and kudos for all correct answers and honest attempts.

Since students are playing a game with a competitive element, please help your younger children understand about taking turns and not shouting out answers. This game will be played sequentially, with each child getting multiple turns. When a child has a turn, regardless of right or wrong answer, the next question goes to the next child. It can be very disheartening to younger children to get shut out of a game when one person is allowed to keep going each time they get a right answer. I want all students to feel included, valued and capable.
If you have a student with special needs, please reach out to me in advance so that together we can determine any accommodations that may be made to help your child feel comfortable and successful in class.
Additionally, I have listed, available in the welcoming message, optional resources your child can access online and use to help get ready for class. Feel free to use other resources if you have them. These are not required in order for children to participate in the game. However, review is always a good thing! The videos and articles listed are free and available, even though some websites offer subscriptions for greater access and value. I am not affiliated with any of the websites.

I am a retired teacher. Over my career of nearly 50 years, I have taught children from preschool to adult. My expertise is in developing developmentally appropriate curriculum for both children and adults. I have taught preschool, elementary school through 9th grade, and adults as an adjunct faculty member in a teacher education program.
