In this one-time class, learners will be able to identify the characteristics of a strong topic sentence so that they will be able to present an idea in writing that serves to unify information and set the tone for an 8-10 sentence paragraph.  Learners will read and study paragraphs on different topics and learn how the topic sentence used in each paragraph captures, highlights, and serves as a focal point/main idea which unifies the rest of the paragraph that provides the supporting details.  Then, they will create their own 8-10 sentence paragraph applying the information they have learned.  My teaching style is very learner centered.  I am more of a facilitator, setting the guidelines for what needs to be accomplished; then, through open discussions and a variety of activities/slides, integrate the input from all the learners where they are also learning from each other.  Students do not need to have any prior knowledge before attending this class.  They will need paper and pencil/pen.
