Tackling Academic Texts with Annotation & Close Reading
In this interactive one-hour class, high school students will learn essential strategies to comprehend and analyze academic texts with confidence.

📖 What Will Be Taught?

Ms. AJ will guide students through key reading strategies to enhance understanding, including:
✔️ Active Reading – Engaging with the text to improve focus and retention.
✔️ Annotation Techniques – Marking key ideas, questions, and themes.
✔️ Close Reading – Examining details for deeper comprehension.
✔️ Summarizing & Skimming – Identifying main ideas and filtering essential information.

Learning Needs
I have extensive experience working with neurodiverse students, and will happily differentiate and provide accommodations to ensure every learner can be successful in this course.
Pre-Requisites
Students should be able to comfortably read at a 5th grade level or above.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will be using several documents to practice our skills: an excerpt of a primary source from U.S. historical documents and an article.
