Beat the summer slide by reviewing your math skills all summer long!

Each week we will review a different second grade math standard. Then we will make it more challenging to start preparing for the third grade standards they will be learning this upcoming school year. I believe in using the I do, we do, you do method of teaching. I will start by sharing a few examples and go through the steps. Then we will go through a few examples together. Finally, students will have an opportunity to test out their skills on their own.

Week of 6/9: Multi-Digit Addition with Regrouping
This reinforces the second grade standard of addition with regrouping into the hundred’s place and introduces the third grade standard of addition with regrouping into the thousand’s place. We will go over different strategies like the standard algorithm or using the expanded form. Once we find a method we feel comfortable using, we will solve a few single-step addition word problems. We will learn how to break down a word problem and define different clue words.

Week of 6/16: Multi-Digit Subtraction with Regrouping
This reinforces the second grade standard of subtraction with regrouping into the hundred’s place and introduces the third-grade standard of subtraction with regrouping into the thousand’s place. We will go over different strategies like using the standard algorithm or using the expanded form. Once we find a method we feel comfortable using, we will solve single-step subtraction word problems. We will also learn how to break down a word problem and look for clue words.

Week of 6/23: Two-Step Addition and Subtraction Word Problems
This reinforces the second-grade standard of addition and subtraction single step word problems and introduces the third-grade standard of solving two-step word problems. We will discuss how to recognize if the word problem they are doing is a two-step word problem, learn how to break down a word problem, and define different clue words.

Week of 6/30 and 7/7: Telling Time to the Nearest Minute
This reinforces the second-grade standard of telling time to the nearest five minutes and introduces the third-grade standard of telling time to the nearest minute. We will go over the hour and minute hands on the clock and discuss what the job of each hand is. We will start by telling time to the hour, move to telling time by five minutes, and then once this is mastered, go to telling time to the minute. We will also discuss what happens when the hour hand is between two numbers. Learners should know how to skip count by fives for this week’s lesson. Finally, we will talk about quarter after, half past, and quarter til.

Week of 7/14: Fractions Using Shapes and Number Lines
This reinforces the second-grade standard of recognizing and dividing shapes into halves, thirds, and quarters and introduces the third-grade standard of recognizing fractions with larger denominators in a shape and on a number line. We will start by talking about what fractions are and how they differ from whole numbers and what the numerator and denominator do. Then we will divide shapes, and once students have reached mastery of that, we will learn to find fractions on a number line. Finally, we will solve word problems that will have a fraction as the answer.

Week of 7/21: Counting Money
This reinforces the second-grade standard of counting money to $5.00. To make it more challenging and applicable to real-world situations, we will be counting money up to higher numbers using all of the coins and bills up to $20.00. We will start by talking about the difference between dollars and coins and then go over the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. Next, we will count coins to find the total, and then we will start with the total and find the coins we can use to make that total. After learners feel more comfortable using coins, we will start making larger sums of money and use different bills to make bigger totals. Learners should know how to skip count by fives and tens for this week’s lesson.

Week of 7/28: Introduction to Multiplication
This introduces third grade multiplication standards. We will not be memorizing math facts, but we will go over strategies to solve basic one-digit multiplication problems. We will talk about how multiplication is similar to addition and that multiplication is just adding the same number several times.

Week of 8/4: Introduction to Division
This introduces third grade division standards. We will not be memorizing math facts, but we will go over strategies to solve basic one-digit division problems. We will go over the different parts of a division problem and what each part represents. We will also discuss how division is similar to subtraction.

Week of 8/11: Multiplication and Division Word Problems
We will continue working on our new multiplication and division strategies. We will find clue words and discuss the vocabulary associated with word problems that have multipication and division.

Week of 8/18: Picture Graphs, Bar Graphs, and Line Plots
This reinforces the second grade standard of learning how to read these graphs. Third grade standards also cover these graphs. We will learn about the different parts of each graph, answer questions about existing graphs, and then create our own graphs.

Week of 8/25: Shapes and Lines
This reinforces the second grade geometry standards and introduces types of lines which are covered in third grade standards. We will be talking about polygons, symmetry, sides, vertices, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and intersecting lines

그 외 세부 사항

학부모 가이드
I will be using Google Slides via screen share, but learners will not need to access anything on their own.
수업 자료
Most weeks learners will be provided with a worksheet we will work on together in class. On weeks where a worksheet is not needed, learners will only need paper and a pencil.
