The purpose of this to support students as they work on their summer reading assignments for school. Before the class, students will purchase their require summer reading book(s) and a notebook. Each week will have a different lesson topic that they will then apply to the books their are reading. We will cover plot structure, theme, symbolism, and author's purpose over the 9 weeks of the course. We will open with a "brain opener" activity, followed by the week's lesson. Then students will work learn and apply the concept of the lesson to the sections they have read in the book. It will close with sharing what they have discovered in their books and what their reading goal for the final week will be. We will use a combination of slides, video clips, discussion, and printed handouts to support learning. Note to parents: please reach out ahead of time with the title/s of students' summer reading for help with goal setting for pacing.

Students must purchase a copy of their district's/school's required reading books for this class BEFORE the class and start reading the first chapter BEFORE class. Students also need a notebook to keep their session and reading notes tidy so they can complete possible assignments connected to the book.
