주당 1-2시간. Class One: 1) Read the first chapter in the text book. (About an hour, written at a comfortable, mid-high school level) 2) Go over the list of terminology to see if you need clarification about any of the terms. You may use Google, Investopedia or any other resources you find online to look up terms you are unsure about, and bring any questions to the next class. 3) Look at the review questions. How many can you answer? Bring questions you are unsure about to the next class for discussion. You don't have to write the answers and turn them in to me, but you may if you want to. 4) Research your chosen stock and, if you are comfortable doing so, prepare to report back to the group in writing or orally. Class Two: 1) Read Chapter Two (about an hour of your time, mid high-school level). 2) Set up your portfolio and begin buying stocks and funds. 3) Review Chapter Two terminology list, look up unfamiliar terms and remember anything you need to ask. 4) Use the review questions to determine any areas you need to read again or ask me about. Again, you don't have to write your answers, but you may answer in writing and send them to me if you want to. 5) Personal reflection assignment may be done in writing or just as a thought exercise. Class Three: Keep researching stocks and funds and building your simulated investment portfolio.학습 평가

수업 소개
This course includes four classes and at least six months of access to a stock market simulation challenge ($15 value and only available through educational institutions). Students are always excited about getting access to the virtual trading platform and building a mock portfolio, and I make sure they know what they are doing before they get started. We spend two days covering important information, then they have a few days to build their portfolios before we get back together to discuss their investing choices. Students will become familiar with basic terminology about the stock market and use the terminology accurately in their discussions. They will understand what the stock market is and how indexes (the S&P 500, The Dow and NASDAQ) are used to measure stock market performance. They will learn the difference between private and public corporations and individual stocks and funds. They will learn how investors make profits with capital gains and dividends. With some basic research about a stock/company, they will learn to make wise investment decisions. Once they have learned the necessary information, they will be ready to create and manage an investment portfolio, explain the rationale for their investment decisions, monitor their returns and explain why their portfolio gains or loses value. The first class covers lots of information, but the e-textbook includes terminology and review questions to help them remember what we discuss. For homework, each student completes a short research project on a stock (or two) they have selected. In the second class, students have an opportunity to report what they have learned about their selected stocks. There is no pressure to make an oral report, but most students enjoy telling their classmates what they have learned. We spend some time discussing how to read a stock chart and place orders. By the end of the second class, students will have some ideas about investments that interest them and be ready to receive login instructions for their Personal Finance Lab accounts. During the third class, we will make sure everyone has had an opportunity to buy something to put in their account. We will discuss students' investment choices, then move on to the topic of diversification. There are a couple of ways students can diversify their portfolios, so we will talk about choosing stocks from different sectors of the market as well as looking at diversified funds managed by others. The final class will give us a chance to cover any important content we have not had time to cover, and to have a question/answer session. We'll wrap up by investigating opportunities to continue learning independently using the abundant resources on the market simulation platform. If there is sufficient interest from students who complete this class, I will open a weekly investing club and/or develop a course to teach them to (safely) trade stock options! I look forward to meeting your students and helping them prepare for an informed and prosperous financial future.

The Personal Finance Lab is a learning platform with a stock market simulator that is available to educational institutions. While there is a free version of the program, I have selected the upgraded version for my students. This version allows me to customize the trading features I make available, including options trading. If there is sufficient interest, I will be adding an advanced stock market course in the future which includes options trading. The $15/student registration cost for the simulator is included in the course fees.
There is no concerning content in the stock market simulator, but students' investing portfolios and rationale for selecting specific investments may be visible to other teens who are enrolled in the same challenge.

I'm an experienced teacher and successful investor. I have been managing my own investment portfolio since 2012 and successfully and safely incorporating options into my investing strategies since 2017. In 2020, I retired from a 30-year career in public education and established Saylor Financial Fundamentals, teaching adult Novice Investors how to get started in the stock market. I have taught hundreds of adults from the US and other countries how to invest. I have certifications from the State of NC to teach students of all ages from preschool to high school, including (among others) licenses to teach Math and students who are academically gifted. Expanding my financial education services to include teens is a logical next step!
