Each week of the class will feature a different design challenge based on problems that affect our lives and the environments of the world. Students will be guided through the engineering design process, research the problem of the week to learn why it is important, and then create their own solution to the problem. Along the way they will explore science and math concepts, use technology tools to create and evaluate their solutions, and communicate the results of their work. Opportunities for student to student and student to teacher interaction and extension activities will be embedded. They will learn about and work as mechanical engineers, civil engineers, architectural engineers, and environmental engineers. Challenges: Week 1: There is a terrible drought going on in the landlocked country of Chad on the continent of Africa. A humanitarian aid organization is planning to air drop supplies to remote villages. Can you design a container that will protect the supplies from any damage and land safely in the village? Week 2: Changes in the world’s climate have caused an increase in the number of avalanches in recent years. Your city, located at the base of the Big Snowy Mountains in Montana, is planning to build barriers to protect the homes and citizens from avalanches and have asked your firm to submit a proposal. Week 3: Earthquakes produce significant damage to property and city infrastructure every year. This challenge has two parts - first you will make your own seismograph to measure earthquake (shaking your table) strength. Then design a structure that will withstand an earthquake with little to no damage. Week 4: As the world works to fight climate change, more cities are turning to alternative sources to produce clean electricity. The mayor of your town has asked for wind turbines to be installed to produce energy, but wants them to have an artistic design that will enhance the city. Can you design a wind turbine that is also a kinetic sculpture to produce electricity in an aesthetically pleasing way? Week 5: Water pollution is a major problem in many areas of the world. In this challenge you will design a water filtration system that will clean water that is polluted with various types of trash, using materials you have available at home. Week 6: Many ecosystems are being damaged by the introduction of species that are not native to the area. Recently, the Cuban Tree Frog has been spotted in some areas of Florida. They compete with native species for food and can be a nuisance for people. Florida Wildlife Preservation Society has asked your firm to create a way to trap and remove these frogs without harm so they can be relocated to their native habitat.

6 주 이상레슨1:
Drought in Chad
This week is centered on the causes and effects of the severe drought in Chad, along with the world relief organizations efforts to combat starvation. After exploring the topic, learners will design, build, and test a system to deliver aid packages to remote areas of Chad.
레슨2:
Avalanche!
Each year avalanches occur in many parts of the world, and can destroy homes, villages, and take lives. Engineers work to control this problem by building avalanche barriers in areas that experience them often. This week's challenge it to create an avalanche model, design barriers to keep the snow from destroying a village at the bottom of the mountain, and test different angles of slope for effectiveness.
레슨3:
Earthquakes!
Earthquakes happen all over the world and can destroy entire cities. In this challenge, we will look at the causes and effects of earthquakes. Acting as civil engineers, we will construct a building that can withstand the power of different magnitudes of earthquakes and test it on an "earthquake table" constructed from cardboard, tennis balls, and rubber bands.
레슨4:
Wind Power
It is critical that populations reduce their carbon footprints by moving from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources. One of this is the use of wind turbines. However, many people don't want wind turbines in their areas because they are an eyesore. The challenge is to design a working wind turbine (powered by a fan) that is also a pleasing kinetic sculpture.

학부모 가이드
Each week will feature teacher created videos and student paced lessons via NearPod. Student research will be conducted using articles and videos pre-screened by the teacher for learning level, scientific accuracy, and age appropriateness. All articles will be from scientifically reliable sources and any YouTube videos will be screened for content.
Students will be provided with a link to a teacher created Symbaloo that will house these pre-screened resources. No Google searches will be allowed for research.

I taught 5th grade science in the largest public school system in my state for 17 years. During that time I attended intense science training programs led by Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine, and i3Laser through the Smithsonian Institution/Department of Education. I was honored as Teacher of the Year on my campus and a finalist for the District Teacher of the Year. After 17 years, I moved from the classroom to become a STEM instructional coach, supporting teachers across the district in the STEM content areas, and finally as a math and science instructional coach, leading professional development and supporting teachers and students at low performing campuses. I retired from the school district in 2021, and now I am blesses to focus on instilling the love of science in students without the requirements of state and district assessments. In my classes, students will learn and love science; they will not learn science tests!
