수업 소개

“Science is not opposed to storytelling. Science is a genre of storytelling. Stories of the real world, inspired by observations thereof.”~Sean Carroll

Science meets storytelling in this literature-based STEM class. Students will explore mythology, fairy tales, folklore, and legends from a whole new perspective: as a scientist, an engineer, or an artist! Weekly STEM challenge projects will be inspired by well-known tales of old.

Working together or individually, students will complete a project that tests their creativity, ingenuity, and problem solving skills. Like the mighty Heracles...will they be up to the task? In fact, inspired by the 12 Labors of Hercules, this course is designed with 12 missions per "segment" (1 per week, with a new batch every 12 weeks for 48 weeks or one full year). Students can join in at any time, and track their accomplishments by collecting stamps for their "STEAM Legends" Passport.

Each class will include:
--Group welcome with optional warm-up activity, plus review of supplies, etc
--An introduction to a well-known myth, legend, folktale, or fantasy legend
--A brief exploration of the STEAM concepts we will be testing/exploring in our projects
--An outline of the weekly challenge/parameters plus any tips/tricks OR a step-by-step build/project led by the instructor
--Time to work on the challenge with instructor guidance and support (sometimes individually, occasionally in breakout rooms with partners or groups)
--Presentation of completed or in-progress projects, with reflection prompts from teacher that help to reinforce and enhance the learning experience and concepts

This class is built on the concept of Project-Based Learning. While some projects will be guided to provide a framework of understanding and a basic starting point, many of the weekly challenges will be mostly open-ended. The goal of this class is experimentation, collaboration, and creativity in a positive, affirming environment. The goal is NOT to be "right" or "wrong" but to be playful in our experimentation, discovery and curiosity. The students may not finish their projects in class. In such cases, they will be encouraged to continue working on them after class and to share their results via classroom posts (photos, videos, etc) or at the beginning of the next meeting.

Weekly themes are subject to change per teacher discretion, and will be updated in the listing and classroom posts as necessary.

학습 목표
This class is designed to inspire confidence and creativity in the STEAM/STEM fields : Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Through an imaginative, playful approach, students will explore concepts such as: strong structures, mass, force, balance, design process, cyphers and codes, simple machines, and more. As life-long learners, they will grow their ability to work with others, communicate their ideas and challenges, apply critical thinking and problem solving to creative and complex tasks, learn to trust their creativity and intuition, and develop the confidence to experiment through joyful, story-inspired science and engineering tasks.

This class is built on the concept of Project-Based Learning. The challenges will be mostly open-ended, even though there are already proven ways to complete the project. The goal of this class is experimentation, collaboration, and creativity in a positive, affirming environment. The goal is NOT to be "right" or "wrong" but to be playful in our experimentation, discovery and curiosity.

Shiny Happy Kids is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, affirming space for all kinds of learners. Growing up as ND and gifted kids, our ND teachers understand the need for classrooms where everyone gets to shine!
학부모 가이드
This class will reference mythology and fantasy stories and content, which are not always "happy endings." Many myths involve themes of death, betrayal, loss, and destruction that some more sensitive learners will find disturbing. All content and imagery will be presented in an age-appropriate manner, but adult caregivers should be sure to reach out to the instructor with any concerns so that the teacher can work with families on an appropriate solution. Regarding supplies/activities: Occasional movement activities will always be basic in nature (animal moves, etc) but please be sure to provide adult supervision if you feel it is necessary. Participation in movement activities is never required. Please contact the teacher with any concerns. Allergy Note: Playdough may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease. I am happy to provide a recipe for gluten-free playdough upon request, or suggest alternative supplies. Please provide adult assistance with cutting/scissor-use as needed per the parents' discretion and child's ability.
수업 자료
Each week, we will use some or all of the following:
Paper and pencil, construction paper, colored pencils/markers/crayons, building/construction blocks/toys (ie plastic building bricks), small manipulatives, sculpting materials such as clay, sculpey, or playdough, glue stick, scissors (adult assistance may be necessary), plain white paper plates, straws, popsicle sticks, tape, cardboard, paper towel rolls, etc.

A folder with pockets and brads is recommended, OR a blank, spiral-bound sketch book or journal (spiral-bound opens flat for ease of use), preferable one that opens horizontally for a side-by-side layout of reflection pages.

Printed materials will be provided before each meeting. Access to a printer is required--but if none is available, please contact teacher to arrange an alternative solution. (We will do our best to make it work!)

Additional materials may be requested prior to individual classes, but they will be common household or office supplies that are easy to find in most homes. Alternative suggestions are always available upon request if a student does not have access to a supply we will be using.

I'm so excited to share my love of learning about the world with you! I've been teaching STEAM and Social Studies topics like mythology, art, animals, science and more to preschool through middle school for 8 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool.
