In this On-going class, we will start every class by reading and discussing a story. After the story, I will set up a STEM challenge that requires the learner to create something that will solve a problem or answer a question. STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math. Most challenges will focus on Engineering but other areas my be needed to complete the challenge. Every once in a while, we make it a STEAM class and the challenge will be an ART activity. Class Format: After reading and discussing the story, I will build their background knowledge by giving them some information about the science topic(s), discuss real world examples or experiences if appropriate , and explain the Engineering Design Process. I will adapt the EDP to meet class needs if engineering isn't a focus. Learners will be given design time to work on their design blueprint, time to build, and time to try it out. We will wrap up the class by sharing our creations and reflecting on what worked and didn't work and what they can change to make it better. I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. I am in the Central time zone. REFUNDS: I use the 'LIMITED' refund policy for my classes. If a student is a 'no show' and/or misses a class for whatever reason, I will not refund or do a special make-up class. A class recording will be posted in the classroom after the session is completed for your reference. If all registered learners are a 'no show', there will be no recording. If you have questions about the class, you may email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS * I do try to allow students in a couple of minutes before class time to chat and get to know each other before we start class, but when class starts we need to stay on topic. * I expect all students to participate in class. * I do prefer to see your faces during class but, if you wish to have the camera off during class, you will need to introduce who you are with the camera on before class starts. *I ask that students take turns to answer questions, share ides, or make comments during class. I love and encourage class participation, but our time together is limited and I want to hear each student. * Have fun and learn something new is my most important expectation.
학습 목표
In this on-going class, students will learn about the engineering design process and practice their design skills. We will also build background knowledge on various science topics. I will use the Next Generation Science Standards to guide our topics.

수업 자료
Here is a list of possible items that learners can use to make their creations. They are not limited to these items. Please feel free to include any other materials the may helpful in creating. I suggest making a STEM bin of materials to keep adding to as class continues. If a challenge needs a specific item, I will list that well in advance. - Large blocks of any kind - Boxes, bags -Toilet paper and/or paper towel rolls - Tissue paper and/or regular paper - Toothpicks and/or wooden skewers - Marshmallows and/or gumdrops or something to hold sticks together together - Tape or something similar - Anything else you like to use to create things- Use your imagination.

Hello everyone! Thank you so much for taking the time to get to know me.
I live in Arkansas with my husband. We have 2 wonderful children but we are empty nesters. They have grown and flown our nest. I have been officially teaching for 30 years, but my mother owned a preschool/day care center as I was growing up and my summer job was always there. So it is safe to say, I have been around kids and/or teaching kids my whole life. I also taught Sunday School for about 15 years.
I have a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Lyon College and earned my Masters of Science in Education from Arkansas State University. I earned this degree while teaching full time.
I am also National Board Certified in Early to Middle Grades Language Arts. Gaining this certification made me a better, more reflective teacher. It helped me to understand how to teach the whole child and not just the curriculum. It changed me as a teacher.
My current position is an Instructional Facilitator for an elementary school with grades K-3. I spend most of my days helping other teachers implement effective teaching strategies and understanding their class data to plan instruction. I am also trained in identifying students with characteristics of Dyslexia and planning their interventions. This training solidified my thoughts on how all students learn differently. With this job comes other duties that are too many to list. I love every minute of it.
My philosophy of teaching is to teach the whole child and understand that every child is different and learns in different ways. I like to get to know the students I teach, even if it is for a short time, so I can make their learning experience fun and engaging.
I am very passionate about building a foundation for reading and comprehending. Most of the classes I teach will be based on that premise. I want to teach children how to decode words which will give them the ability to be able dive deep into a text and enjoy it to the fullest. All readers struggle at some point, so knowing how to crack the code on decoding will allow them to have the confidence to work through it and keep reading.
I also love reading aloud with and to children. Therefore, I have created a series of classes centered around STE(A)M. These classes involve a read aloud and a STEM challenge. Integrating subject ares with a read aloud is one of my niches.
Aside from all the teaching, I love to read. I read a lot of children's books and young adult novels to keep up with the kids at school, but I love a good mystery! I love to watch sports and am an avid Arkansas Razorback fan. Go Hogs!
