Class experience

US Grade 4 - 7
10 lessons//10 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Favorite things-poem
We will talk about what makes a good Poem. We will have a Star Wars discussion on the Outschool classroom about our favorite Star Wars things. This could be ANYTHING related to Star Wars. The students will practice writing about their favorite thing using rhymes and stanzas. They will submit their finished work either publicly on the Classroom, or privately to me for revision.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Character- hamburger paragraph
In this class we will learn how to "hamburger" a paragraph together. We will learn the 3 elements of a paragraph: the paragraph leader, supporting sentences and concluding sentence. I will give examples of good and bad paragraphs. The students will receive a handout. The students will unlock a special character using a "key" they will receive before class. They will write at least one paragraph about their invented character. They may continue to write about this character after class is over if
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Location- descriptive brochure
We will talk about different locations in the Star Wars saga: where battles took place, the students' favorite planets, etc. We will discuss descriptive paragraphs. I will show examples. The students will then write an outline for a descriptive paragraph about a planet or location they make up. They will also be able to draw/color their location, add details, and fun facts using a Brochure printout.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Supporting roles- letter writing
There are many lead characters in Star Wars. Sometimes supporting roles are just as important. In this class we will talk about how to write a good letter. We will discuss a situation where one of our friends is in a tight spot and we need to write them a letter of encouragement to cheer them up. The letters will be uploaded to the classroom where we will share our thoughts and feedback with each other.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Jedi Master- instruction writing
In this class we will learn about some of the main characters in the Star Wars saga. We will learn how to write out good and clear instructions. The students will then write instructions to their Padawans and upload it to the classroom.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Movie- persuasive writing
In this class students will choose a favorite Star Wars movie (or book) to write about. They will learn about persuasive writing and how to write a good paragraph using persuasion. They will then write about which movie, in their opinion, is the best, and persuade others as to why.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Darth Vader VS Kylo Ren- comparative writing
We will discuss the similarities and differences between Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. We will be learning how to use a Venn-Diagram and discussing our thoughts as a group. The students will fill out their Venn-Diagram and then write a paragraph or two as to how these two characters are alike and different. Upload the paragraph(s) to the classroom and see what others have come up with.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Baddest bad guy- opinion writing
This week we will discuss who we think the "baddest bad guy" is. The students will be able to discuss together who they would choose and why. We will learn how to write an opinion paper. The students will each be able to write their own opinion paragraph and share it with the class.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Star Wars invention- creative paragraph
In this class we will talk about amazing inventions found in Star Wars. We will learn about creative writing. We will go over the writing prompt of creating a new invention for the Star Wars universe.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
May the force be with you- story writing
In this class we will focus on writing longer stories. If the student has taken any of the other classes, they can use some of the paragraphs they previously used to add to a longer, more in-depth story. We will talk about aspects of a story; including plot, location, climax, ending, etc. The students will be able to start working on their stories. Once completed, they will upload it to the Outschool classroom and receive feedback from myself and their peers on their story.
Students will learn to become more confident writers by learning to write a poem, a paragraph, a story, and more. They will get feedback for their submissions and have the opportunity to comment on their peers’ submissions, too.
I am a college graduate who has been writing/grading papers for year. I have tutored many students in English and Math. To this day, I am still reviewing college papers before submission. I also love all things Star Wars. This class is a great mix of writing and Star Wars.
Homework Offered
Each week students will receive instructional information on how to complete the week's writing assignment based on the theme or focus for the week. Once completed they will share their paragraphs and assignment in the Outschool classroom where they will be able to view other students' assignment, give and receive feedback, comment, and interact with others.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
There will not be a formal assessment. I will check the assignments for clarity and a general understanding. If there are major spelling or grammatical errors I will address those. Mistakes are OK, and I will not overly focus on fixing every problem with the writing assignments.
Grades Offered
Printouts (available weekly)
Pencil/pen
Extra paper
If your student needs help writing please be able to assist if necessary, as well as helping them upload their finished assignments.
Some of the movies in the Star Wars series are PG and PG-13. I will facilitate discussion as to not cross any lines with the discussions.
