What is Spanish 1?
Spanish 1 is for the beginner Spanish student and is traditionally offered in year 1 of high school, but a student may begin Spanish 1 whenever they desire to start learning Spanish. There is no prior knowledge of Spanish necessary for this class.

Why Self-Paced?
This course was created from my live Spanish 1 course. It is my own curriculum, designed in such a way to not only complete the Spanish 1 requirements but most importantly to help students grasp the language and begin using it. This asynchronous style course allows a student to complete lessons and activities on their schedule and at their pace. The student does not lose the magic of a live classroom as the video lessons are interactive with verbal prompts, question/answer, and other interactive activities. This class will offer the opportunity for students to interact verbally with me in the security of their own space! Students listen and repeat to practice pronunciation and they respond to questions to practice forming language. The beauty of self-paced also allows students to pause or repeat in order to ensure they have grasped a concept or to gain more practice. While working through each video lesson students are simultaneously working through Nearpod activities to go along with the lesson. I check in on the students' work in Nearpod as well as their comments and question responses that are part of the course assignments. This ensures that although a student is taking the course at their pace, they are not alone and will always have me to reach out to with questions or doubts.

What will it be like for a student in Self-Paced Spanish 1?
Spanish 1 semester 1 consists of 6 units. Each unit contains 8-9 video lessons. There are approximates 3 vocabulary quizzes in a unit, 1 after each 3 lessons. A student completes each unit with a written unit test and verbal review activities. There are recommended written assignments, as well as regular engagement questions to get students using Spanish outside of the lesson time. I check the students work in Nearpod, send feedback with their graded tests, and engage and offer correction where needed on the classroom page as they respond to each lesson's question.

Parental Guidance
The total number of hours suggested for this course including the time watching the video-lessons is 2-3 hours. Students are encouraged to complete written work each week outside of the videos but it should not take more than 1-1.5 hours over the course of the week. This is an academic course and as such does require a high level of commitment. I am always available to help a student where they need and will always try to be flexible or make adjustments for students if needed.
