As we are introducing this science project, students will be able to identify the different phases of the moon using Oreos. We will start off with class introductions. During this time students will be able to share what they already know about the moon. Once class introductions are completed, students will learn about the Moon’s appearance changes during the four-week lunar cycle. They will learn about what causes these changes and how it affects our daily lives. Students will complete a worksheet that has the different phases of the moon using Oreos.  Students will carefully twist one cookie apart and use the side of the cookie that has the frosting on it. The frosting represents the Moon. Now, if we are to start at the beginning of the lunar cycle, what would this look like?” Answers may vary, but it should be stated the first phase is a New Moon. Since we can’t see the New Moon, this is the only time that an unfrosted cookie is on the paper. This will be the example for the class to show the starting point and each successive cookie should follow the correct order in the lunar cycle. Once the worksheet is completed, we will discuss any new facts we have learned and EAT OUR COOKIES.
