In this full year ongoing social studies class, we will meet twice a week for thirty minutes. The students will be presented with a stand-alone individual lesson/activity in social studies that focuses on a general understanding of concepts that enable students to think critically about local, regional, national, and global issues. The overall social studies content is based upon five units of study Geography, Citizenship, Economics, Government, and History. Each individual lesson will be presented through a slide presentation that consists of a group lesson. First introducing the concepts with content specific vocabulary and an Informational reading text about a specific historical concept using primary and secondary authentic sources that considers many viewpoints. After the lesson the students will complete an activity to reinforce the concept. The lessons in this curriculum reflect concepts from National Social Studies and History Standards (NCSS). I have outlined the current unit of the Ongoing Social Studies Curriculum below. The following meeting titles will be presented through our bitmoji classroom where students will meet to complete their assignments. Geography: What is a community? Students learn where people and places are located and why they are there. They examine the influence of physical systems, such as climate, weather and seasons, and natural resources, such as land and water, on human populations. They study the causes, patterns and effects of human settlement and migration, learn of the roles of different kinds of population centers in a society, and investigate the impact of human activities on the environment. The lessons in this curriculum reflect concepts from National Social Studies and History Standards (NCSS). These standards reflect an overall consistency of what could be presented at each grade level. The NCSS and Library of Congress developed digital resources for use in teaching social studies that demonstrates the effectiveness of teaching with primary sources and secondary resources.

As an elementary classroom teacher, I have taught social studies for many years. Providing knowledge and helping students to think critically about local, regional, national, and global issues through the study of citizenship, the role of the local government, symbols, branches of government and how citizens influence government. Along the way the students are building their reasoning skills and gaining a greater understanding of their world. I have seen young students grow and develop in global citizenship.
