수업 소개

**NOTE: PLEASE CONTACT TEACHER IF YOU NEED AN ALTERNATE CLASS TIME! More times available than listed.**

This class is designed to be a private, one-on-one weekly class to tackle social awareness, social language, social interaction, peer interaction, talking to people in the community, etc.

You may want to take the "Real Talk: Advanced Conversational Skills for Kids" group class, but are hesitant to talk about social skills with other learners. There might be a scheduling conflict, or you need a more flexible schedule. Perhaps there's a situation or event coming up that you want to prepare for, or a question about communication that wasn't outright taught to you, but everyone else seems to know about it.

In the 3+ years I have taught my "Real Talk" classes, I have created an extensive library covering a multitude of social skills/awareness/communication that can be used for each class. This is the same library I will draw from for this private version.

This class can be used as a stepping stone to the group class "Real Talk: Advanced Conversational Skills for Kids", or as a private version of that class.

Topics could/will include:
-"How do I connect/build rapport with my classmates?"
-"I have to answer the phone while my mom is working - how do I even do that?"
-"I can start a conversation, but I don't know how to keep it going."
-"I really want to talk to this group of girls at dance class, but I never know if it's the right time, or if I'm interrupting."
-"How do I meet other people? I want to find people who like what I like."
-"I'm about to take a flight by myself, and I'm not sure who to ask for help before, during, and after my flight, and what to ask them or how to ask."
-"My teacher says I say, "Um..." too much when I give presentations, and I just need to practice!"
-"Someone told me I smell and I don't really understand why everyone's so hung up on that... does it really matter?"
-"I'm going into sixth grade and people are having parties. What do I do there?"
-"I'm honest with people and then they hate me - what am I doing wrong? You shouldn't lie, so I don't get it."

My teaching style is warm, empathetic, nurturing, and fun. I center my teaching in real-world situations and expectations.

There is no required experience or background knowledge required for this class.

All learning styles and abilities are welcome.

Both neurotypical and neurodiverse (and everything in between!) learners are welcome. All gender expressions (binary, nonbinary, fluid, etc.) are respected.

학습 목표

Learners will build their "communication toolbox" of skills to help them tackle various real-world situations. Practice makes perfect, right? Class topics will be very similar to or the same as the multi-learner class ("Real Talk: Advanced Conversational Skills for Kids"), but with more privacy for learners who prefer to learn on their own.

그 외 세부 사항

학부모 가이드
Social etiquette involves knowing when, where, and how to talk about certain topics. Being an able communicator means knowing how to talk to many different types of people from many different backgrounds. It also means communicating what you want/need to, and not communicating other information. There may be references to people coming different secular/faith backgrounds, people arguing about politics, the origin of the term "bless you" when someone sneezes, etc. However there is no "indoctrination" to any particular point of view. I tell the learners, "I'm here to help you build skills to communicate with many types of people in many situations. Every family has their own rules. Check with your parents or guardians if you are not sure what is right for your family." Please message the teacher if there are particulars that should be noted, or you have any questions.

Suzanne holds an M.A. in Education - Speech-Language Pathology, and a B.A. in Linguistics (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Campuswide Honors Program, Linguistics Honors Program), with an emphasis in Sociolinguistics and a secondary emphasis in Historical Linguistics. Her Honors thesis, "'Like', 'go', and 'all' in the speech of Southern California youth," (1996) reflected her desire to understand how language is actually used. In high school, she was on drill/dance team and in theatre, belonged to a slew of clubs, played in two string ensembles, was an award-winning creative writer, and was a National Merit Commended Scholar.

She is a speech-language pathologist, an educator, and a parent of three kids (two teens, one elementary-aged) with various special learning and health needs. She is also a twice-exceptional/NAT individual.

She has experience (as a professional, a parent, or a volunteer) across the full spectrum of education, including public school, private school (secular, Christian, International Baccalaureate), homeschool, homeschool co-op, online school, de-schooling, mainstream education, special education, special day class, Deaf/HOH schools, and day care. She is familiar with a variety of curricula and has also developed her own curricula. She has approximately 20 years of experience as speech-language pathologist, and has been volunteering in schools since she was a fifth grader (more years ago than she'll admit). She has dedicated her life to lifting children up and supporting their educational and socio-emotional needs.

In her spare time - when she has any - she is a performer (dance production, modeling, on-screen acting), takes voice lessons, manages her daughter's acting career, reads voraciously, plays multiple musical instruments, and writes.
