Students of similar reading levels just learning to read will work on building reading skills to improve their reading levels. This class is geared towards preschool, kindergarten, or first grade students who already know their letters and are ready to take their reading skills to the next level. We focus on putting it all together to begin to learn to read and to build reading confidence. The reading tutoring session follows a guided reading model. Students will work on sight words, focus on essential phonics skills, practice using these skills to read an unfamiliar text, work on fluency with familiar texts, and also incorporate these skills Through fun games. This type of model is teacher led as students participate in various activities such as building words, reading books, and writing sentences.  Class is very structured and follows a specific pattern each class.  This is class is run much like a small group reading class would be within a school setting.   After a 4 week session, students will experience reading growth as well as gain confidence in their reading abilities.  The skills touched on in this beginning level session are sight word fluency of kindergarten level words, making beginning and ending sounds, practicing critical vowel sounds, reading CVC words, and more. We will also work to develop reading strategies such as reading to the end of words, skipping words to figure out what makes sense, flipping the vowel sounds to make a word we know, using known words to figure out unknown words, along with a variety of other comprehension strategies like monitoring reading, asking questions, and developing the story in our heads like a movie as we read.
Many student see significant growth with the guided reading model. It is designed to be used with any book. After each 4 week sessions, learner can sign up again and  continue in another class working at their level to further build reading skills and grow in confidence.
