This class is designed to be both a book club as well as a beginning writing class. What does that mean the children will be learning?

• The book club aspect encourages a love of reading, listening/reading comprehension, and helps to develop conversational skills.

• The writing class aspect helps kiddos learn, understand, and use skills, such as grammar, punctuation, and literary devices, properly.

How will we do this?

Every 4 weeks, a new book will be announced. In the days between classes, children will have the option to read a portion of the book (or have the book read to them) that we will then discuss in class. Reading the book is not mandatory and the kiddos can still benefit from many portions of this class without having done so. However, the greatest benefit will come to students who complete the reading. As we continue these discussions, which will help help us develop our conversation skills and grow our comprehension skills, we will also talk about the structure of writing, so that the kiddos can gain a deeper knowledge of what goes into the choices that a writer makes. Some of these structural pieces include tenses, prepositions, parts off speech, articles, punctuations, and so much more!

The book that we are currently reading is "The Beatryce Prophecy," by Kate DiCamillo. The chapters that we will be discussing each week are:

     • Week of 8/21/23: Chapters 1-6
     • Week of 8/28/23: Chapters 7-11
     • Week of 9/4/23: Chapters 12-17
     • Week of 9/11/23: Chapters 18-22
     • Week of 9/18/23: Chapters 23-28
     • Week of 9/25/23: Chapters 29-33
     • Week of 10/2/23: Chapters 34-39
     • Week of 10/9/23: Chapters 40-43+Epilogue
