Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Looking for tutoring to enhance your child's reading skills? Most struggling readers have poor blending and decoding skills. That's where I come in! In each lesson, we will practice word work, guided oral reading, and re-reading for fluency. The word work increases in phonemic challenge as your child improves from reading just CVC words to CCCVCC in just a couple months.

We'll also learn new vocabulary words from the stories and will work on phonics and grammar.

This course is for elementary students grades 1-5 needing to strengthen their reading and English language arts skills. My goal for each lesson is to increase your child's phonemic awareness and phonics skills so that they become a stronger reader!

As part of my tutoring services, I also offer a free subscription to Reading A-Z (Kids A-Z) for your child. This is a fantastic online reading program that many teachers use to assess students and improve their student's reading. With over 500 books at 29 different levels of reading difficulty, my students have access to many different high-interest books. Along with our lessons, I will assign reading tasks in Reading A-Z for your child to complete each week.

IMPORTANT! If your child is below grade level in reading, my goal is to move them up one whole grade level in 2-3 months. I recommend meeting at least twice a week to reinforce new learning concepts and increase fluency. Each class is 50 minutes but can be shortened for readers with special needs.

I use both the Reading Simplified framework and Reading A-Z books/worksheets for my lessons. The worksheets will be their homework if we don't get to them in class! If you'd prefer no homework, that's fine too!

To break up the lessons, we also play games (Bamboozle/YouTube games/Pictionary) periodically.

Students should have basic phonemic awareness, be able to recognize letters and letter sounds, have pre-reading skills (left-to-right progression, understanding spaces between words), and have an interest in reading. Students should also have had exposure to CVC words, be willing to engage and participate, follow instructions, and have the ability to focus on short reading tasks.

Please let me know your child's current reading level (it's ok if you don't know). In the first two lessons, I'd like to assess their reading abilities. After that, I'll test every couple of months for fluency.

I can't wait to meet you and to start reading lessons!

*Please contact me if there are no times available that fit your schedule. I'm happy to help!

Since 2019, I've helped students grasp new concepts and learn how to be effective communicators in this incredibly diverse world. I'm TEFL and TESOL certified and have experience teaching ESL for over 4 years to students ages 4-15. As an ESL teacher, I've taught over 3000 one-on-one classes to mostly Asian students. I used curriculum that provided lesson plans but extension was encouraged to enhance the classroom learning experience. I regularly had to adapt to different student’s learning styles and encouraged student engagement and output. I taught a variety of subjects in English including literature, history, ; science, and math; and correct errors in a positive way. Lesson feedback was required for each class. I have also worked as a 5th grade paraprofessional for a virtual academy. As instructed by the classroom teacher, I assessed students' abilities and offered 1:1 or group workshops to students who required academic intervention/ gave students regular reading assessments/ recorded student data to either correct or reward behavior/ monitored classroom participation/hosted weekly after-school tutoring/Substituted for the teacher as needed/ Participated in articulation and professional development meetings with parents and teachers in the classroom.
