Reading comprehension and expressive writing go hand-in-hand. Learners are taught the alphabet, letter sounds including vowels and consonants, learn sight and vocabulary words, sound out words, develop good vocabulary, print upper and lower case letters correctly, and begin reading short two, three and four word sentences. 

Learners will read aloud with their Teacher and other learners in the class. Together we will discuss the sequence of events, retell stories, discuss parts of a story [characters, setting, plot, problem, solution], predict and discuss ends and how the learner might change the ending and dictate their own. We'll read stories such as tall tales, fairy tales, fables, nursery rhymes, etc. and work on developing good vocabulary which is mostly learned through reading.

For learners to improve their English writing skills they have to practice writing as often as possible. Learners will begin to write sight words, simple phrases and short two, three, four and five word sentences. 

Learners will review grammar and spelling basics which are the foundation of good writing. The more a learner writes, the better writer a learner will become.

Below is a general outline and structure of each class. This class is ongoing and each week is self-contained so learners can enroll at any time. It is highly recommended that a learner make a commitment to be involved in this course week after week to get the full benefit of improving their reading comprehension and expressive writing skills.

Week of February 26th: Introductions, course structure and outline, Making Connections, Nursery rhyme, chanting & singing

Week of March 4th: Setting up mind-mapping, storyboarding, short story TBA 

Week of March 11th: Short story read aloud, main idea, supporting idea, using the Parts of a Story, drawing conclusions, making the writing connection 

Week of March 18th: Short story read aloud, using the Parts of a Story, supporting details fundamentals of sentence & paragraph writing; discussion of ideas for journaling

Week of March 25th: Short story read aloud, using the Parts of a Story, Introduction to Fables

NO CLASS the week of April 1-5, 2024

Week of April 8th: Short story read aloud, using the Parts of a Story, Introduction to Tall Tales

Week of April 15th: Short story read aloud, using the Parts of a Story, Introduction to Fairy Tales

Week of April 22nd: Short story read aloud, using the Parts of a Story, grammar & spelling rules sequence of events, writing retelling of a short story
