The learning goals for saxophone lessons will depend on the student's individual skill level, interests, and aspirations. However, some general goals that can be pursued during private saxophone lessons may include:

Developing proper playing technique: A fundamental goal for any saxophonist is to develop proper playing technique. This includes things like proper posture, breath control, embouchure, finger positioning, and articulation. By mastering these technical skills, you'll be able to produce a clear and beautiful tone, play with greater ease and accuracy, and ultimately enjoy playing the saxophone more.

Improving note and rhythm accuracy: Another important goal for saxophone students is to improve their note and rhythm accuracy. This includes being able to read and play sheet music accurately, identifying and playing the correct notes, and playing with good timing and rhythm. By developing these skills, you'll be able to play a wider range of music and perform with greater confidence.
Building a repertoire of music: Developing a repertoire of music is a key goal for any saxophonist. This involves learning and practicing a variety of pieces, ranging from beginner-level to advanced. By building a repertoire of music, you'll be able to perform for yourself and others, develop a deeper appreciation for the saxophone, and have fun with your instrument.

Exploring different genres of music: Saxophone students may also want to explore different genres of music, such as classical, jazz, pop, or blues. By learning different styles of music, you'll be able to broaden your musical horizons, gain a greater appreciation for different musical traditions, and improve your ability to play in different musical settings.

Preparing for performances or auditions: Finally, students may want to prepare for performances or auditions. This could involve selecting and practicing pieces for a performance, preparing for a music exam, or auditioning for a music program or ensemble. By setting performance goals and working towards them, you'll be able to build your confidence as a saxophonist and achieve your musical ambitions.
Thank you for your interest in this class. As someone with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a Master's Degree in Education, I am academically competent in teaching this material. During my undergraduate degree, I studied classical saxophone and have worked off and on semi-professionally playing in various ensembles. As well, I have been a music teacher in the public school system for the last 8 years.

My experience has given me the skills and knowledge to teach saxophone in a way that is engaging, challenging, and accessible to all learners. I am passionate about creating inclusive music education classes and am excited to try Outschool to facilitate this. My goal is to create a fun and supportive learning environment that encourages students to explore their love for music and develop their skills on the saxophone.

As with any instrument, homework is an important part of saxophone lessons, and can help students make progress and develop their skills more quickly. Some examples of homework that saxophone students might receive during private lessons include: Practicing scales and exercises: One of the most common forms of homework for saxophone students is to practice scales and exercises. Scales help students to improve their finger dexterity, accuracy, and tone production, while exercises help to build strength and flexibility in the fingers, lips, and tongue. I may provide students with specific scales or exercises to practice at home, or may recommend a particular method book or practice routine. Learning and practicing new pieces: Another form of homework for saxophone students is to learn and practice new pieces of music. This could involve selecting a new piece to work on each week, or working towards a particular performance or exam. I may provide students with sheet music or recordings of new pieces, and may suggest specific areas of focus or practice techniques to help them improve. Recording and self-evaluation: Another effective homework assignment for saxophone students is to record themselves playing and evaluate their own performance. Recording yourself allows you to hear your own playing objectively, identify areas for improvement, and track your progress over time. I may ask students to record themselves playing a particular exercise or piece, and then listen back to the recording and evaluate their own playing. Listening and analysis: Another important part of learning the saxophone is to listen to and analyze the playing of other musicians. As a homework assignment, I may ask students to listen to recordings of famous saxophonists, and to analyze their playing in terms of tone production, phrasing, rhythm, and overall musicality. This can help students to develop their own playing style and musical expression. Research and reflection: Finally, I may ask students to do some research or reflection on a particular topic related to saxophone playing. This could involve researching the history of the saxophone, reflecting on the role of the saxophone in different musical genres, or exploring different playing techniques or equipment. This type of homework helps students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the instrument and its place in the world of music.

I will provide verbal feedback during lessons that focus on ways to improve things such as tone production and technical skills pertaining to playing. As well, I will provide written feedback after the lesson so that students know what specifically to be practicing or what to work on for the next lesson. Here are some other ways I can assess your learner as requested: Technical assessments: One way to assess your students is to evaluate their technical skills, such as posture, breath control, finger positioning, articulation, and tone production. You could do this through exercises or scales that focus on these skills, or by asking them to play a specific passage from a piece of music. Sight-reading assessments: Sight-reading is an important skill for any musician, and you could assess your students' sight-reading abilities by asking them to read and play a piece of music that they haven't seen before. This can give you a sense of their ability to read music accurately and play with good timing and rhythm. Performance assessments: Performance assessments can be a great way to evaluate your students' overall musical abilities. You could ask them to perform a piece of music that they've been working on, and evaluate their tone production, phrasing, rhythm, and overall musicality. You could also assess their ability to perform in different musical styles or settings, such as classical, jazz, or pop music. Self-evaluation and reflection: Another way to assess your students is to ask them to reflect on their own playing and evaluate their own progress. This could involve asking them to record themselves playing and listen back to the recording, or to write a self-evaluation of their playing skills and goals.

Students should own or be renting a saxophone to participate fully in lessons. As well, students should have access to a saxophone method book, either Standard of Excellence, Accent on Achievement, etc. I will supply students with further resources via PDF, or link.

Parental guidance and involvement can be a key factor in your learners success and enjoyment of their saxophone lessons. It is crucial to encourage consistent practice. Regular practice is essential for progress and improvement on the saxophone. Parents can help by setting a regular practice schedule with their learner, and ensuring that they have a quiet and distraction-free place to practice.
Please let me know if your student is a beginner. Learner's who participate in band at school may also have a method book. Please let me know what that method book is. If your learner does not have a method book, I am most familiar with Standard of Excellence and Essential Elements.
