Class Experience

Exact content will be driven by the needs of the students, but will include repertoire pieces supported by appropriate technical studies. Once competency in the basic techniques has been attained, there will be opportunities to encounter music by the great masters such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann, in addition to music by recognised educational composers. Music will generally be geared towards the classical repertoire, but jazz, rock, pop and musical theatre repertoire will be introduced as appropriate, according to the individual interests of students. Teaching will be via one-to-one sessions, mainly using a traditional approach, but utlizing other methodologies (for example, video clips of great pianists, discussion activities) where necessary or desirable. Most benefit from the classes will be achieved if the student already has some prior experience of playing the piano.

Learning Goals

Students will learn correct technique, encapsulating posture, wrist technique, good hand position and finger technique. These are seen as a gateway to being able to enjoy playing great music on the piano. They will also learn different musical styles and genres using repertoire which, although guided, is geared towards their own choice of music. If appropriate, students can also work towards graded piano exams (e.g. ABRSM, Trinity, etc)

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I wasn’t born into an especially musical family, but my dad loved all kinds of music, ranging from the classics to big band jazz, Bing Crosby, and even Led Zeppelin! He passed that love of music on to me and encouraged me to take up the piano in my early teens.
I studied piano at the London College of Music, where I gained my degree, then followed up with a Masters degree in music from the University of Sheffield and, most recently, a PhD in music from the University of Nottingham, where I was a teaching affiliate. I also have diplomas from Trinity College London, the LCM, and a postgraduate teaching certificate from University of London.
Professionally I have worked on educational projects with members of the London Symphony Orchestra and with composer David Bedford. I have played piano regularly in concerts in London and throughout the UK. I'm an examiner for Trinity College London, and have worked in this capacity in the UK, Ireland, Dubai, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and India.
But my first and foremost passion is playing and teaching the piano, which I have been doing for more than 40 years.
In my classes on the Outschool platform, you will find focussed, carefully planned activities specially designed for enjoyment and fun, but just as importantly for developing your skills as a musician and piano player. Look out for topics such as how to play specific pieces of music (including well-loved items like 'Hedwig's Theme' from the 'Harry Potter' movies, Disney tunes, simple but effective arrangements of standard classical repertoire, and so on). You'll also find classes which centre around important aspects of piano technique, general musicianship, music theory, fun and engaging approaches to music history and much much more.
Piano is my passion, and I am so looking forward to teaching you, and helping you on the way to making piano YOUR passion too!
