Students will have an individualized learning experience that cannot be achieved in the group classes. We will use the Science Fusion curriculum appropriate to the student's grade and/or ability level. My teaching strength areas are: -Scaffolding I will constantly be evaluating your child's level and adjusting our class to meet your child's needs. -Student Encouragement I will celebrate wins with your child. I want them to know that I am happy to help them learn and I want them to succeed! -Parent Communication I will communicate frequently with the parents about the anticipated learning goals and I will give frequent check-ins to inform the parents of the learner's progress. 1st grade sample schedule: LESSON 1 Unit 1: Our Five Senses (pages 1-16) - Discuss the Table of Contents. - Learning with our senses - *Activity - Tasting: sweet, sour, salty (Students will be supplied with a handout to print. Please bring something sweet, sour, and salty to class.) - Science tools we can use for measuring: ruler, tape measure, balance, measuring cup, thermometer (Please bring any of these that you have at home.) Homework: *Please complete pages 12 & 13. LESSON 3 Investigation Practice (pages 29-44) - Make a hypothesis and plan about colors. - *Activity - Mix paint colors. (Students will be supplied a handout to print. Parents, please supervise your children while they are painting.) - Learn about Mary Anderson: inventor of windshield wiper LESSON 4 Unit 2: Technology All Around Us (pages 45-60) - How Do Engineers Work? - Five Step Design Process to solve problems - Worksheet - Engineers and other jobs (Students will be supplied a handout to print.) - *Activity - Share an invention in your house that helps you do something. (toothbrush, hairbrush, pencil) LESSON 5 Materials (pages 61-65) 57 - Picture Walk - From Steel to Bicycle, By: Robin Nelson - Bicycle Parts, Read: Sports For Sprouts: Bicycle Riding, By: Tracy Nelson Maurer - *Activity - Show Bicycle Parts in Bicycle Book, By: Gail Gibbons and sketch a bicycle or label the parts on pages 62-63 LESSON 6 Natural vs. Human-Made materials (pages 66-80) 34 - Show students the "Blue Jeans Map" on pages 30-31 in Blue Jeans Before the Store, By: Jody Jensen - *Activity - Make a Materials Chart: toy dinosaur, scissors, socks - Learn about Dr. Eugene Tssui: architect on pages 75-76 Students may use coins, blocks, or playdough to build a building inspired by the book Wacky World of: Baffling Buildings!, by: Hermione Redshaw. The teacher will screen-share the book from Epic. 2nd grade sample schedule: LESSON 1 Unit 1 - Inquiry Skills (pages 1-15) - Discuss the Table of Contents. - Using Inquiry Skills - *Activity - Draw a map of your backyard. - Science Tools After class: For tomorrow, please bring back the measuring objects. Also, your child can show us his/her completed backyard map if they want to add details or color it. We are learning about models and inquiry skills. (pages 41-51) 30 - Learn about different types of engineers: civil, robotics, aerospace - Learn the five steps in the design process. (pages 17-28) Before class - Please read and complete pages 18-25 Show and Tell - Students may make a paper airplane (inspired from page 12) and test it to see if it flies. They can show it to us. These tools may also be shown for show and tell (if the students have any): thermometer, measuring spoons, measuring tape, magnifying box or glass, stopwatch Complete together in class - pages 17, 26-28 We will learn about the fascinating up-close features that are visible under a microscope! LESSON 3 How Do Scientists Use Data? (pages 33-44) Before class - Please read and complete pages 34-40 *Please print the seasons graph to bring to class. Please bring crayons or colored pencils. Show and Tell - a model, map, bar graph, line graph, or data table Complete together in class - pages 33, 41-44, and the season graph After class - Collect data and make your own chart or graph that you may show at the next class. LESSON 4 Careers in Science: Meteorologists (pages 47-52) 32 Before class - Please read page 47 and begin completing the Unit 1 Review on pages 49-52. Show and Tell - Present your own chart or graph. You can make a new one or add more votes to the seasons graph that we made already in class. Complete together in class - page 48 LESSON 5 Unit 1 Review and begin Unit 2: The Engineering Process (pages 49-63) 11 How Do Engineers Use the Design Process? Before class - Finish completing the Unit 1 Review on pages 49-52 and please read and complete pages 56-63. Show and Tell - a bridge Have fun drawing or building a bridge to show us! You may use any materials at your house. Examples - Lego bricks, straws, paper, blocks Your bridge may be copied from a famous bridge or it can be your very own design. Complete together in class - pages 64-65 LESSON 6 How Can You Design a Tree House? (pages 64-68) 34 Before class - Please catch up on any pages you have not completed yet through page 65. Show and Tell - problem/solution (see page 66 for ideas) Complete together in class - pages 66-68 The teacher will screen-share from Epic for Kids: Time to Build, by: Kate Riggs, illustrated by: Laszlo Kubinyi Students will work on drawing the prototype for their dream treehouse on page 68.
