This will be a teacher lead math class; concepts will be presented by the teacher and practiced together as a class. Some lessons will include investigative activities when applicable. All classes will include discussion structured to enhance learning and build community. The topics covered are:
Week 1 and 2: Percents - In this unit we will build off of our study of fractions, decimals and proportions to create percents; we will learn the percent proportion, transition that into the percent equation and use these for applications of percent increase and decrease and applications.
Week 3 thru 5: Linear functions - For the next three weeks we will explore everything linear; we will define and test functions, calculate slopes and integrate the slope into linear equations in multiple forms. We will learn about parallel and perpendicular lines; systems of equations and how to solve them and linear inequalities.
Week 6 thru 8: Real Numbers and Right Triangles: In this unit we will be learning about square roots, approximating the square root of a number, simplifying radical expressions and performing operations on square roots. This will transition into applications of the Pythagorean theorem. We will learn and apply the distance and midpoint formula. We will study special right triangles and finish up with applications of the three basic trigonometry ratios.
Week 9 and 10: Measurement, Area and Volume - For the next two weeks we will be looking at triangles, polygons, quadrilaterals, circles, prisms, cylinders, pyramids and cones. We will be calculating area, perimeter, surface area, and volume.
Week 11 thru 13: Data Analysis and Probability - For the next three weeks we will dive into statistics. We will learn how to properly collect data, create graphs to display the data appropriately and we will analyze the graphs. We will also learn about permutations and combinations; probability of disjoint and overlapping events and bi-variate analysis.
Week 14 and 15: Angle Relationships and Transformations - Our final unit will focus will be on angle relationships, interior and exterior angles and angle measures and transformations of geometric figures in the coordinate plane using coordinate notation.
