수업 소개
Students will benefit from this class in many ways: to be ready for Algebra I, to solidify the knowledge and problem solving ability required by about 70% of the SAT math questions, and to build a strong base for competitive mathematics at an American Mathematics Ccompetition 8 level. The instructor will emphasize the SAT-style questions and common errors, as well as the AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS style problems. Pre-requisites: multidigit multiplication and division, division with remainder, decimals, operations with decimals. Homework: proficiency is built through independent work. Homework is assigned on a daily basis and must be completed! We check homework completion. Two self-check tests are included for personal assessment. Syllabus and lesson plan: Lesson 1: - Rounding decimals - Prime and composite numbers - Divisibility rules Lesson 2: - Prime factorization - LCM - GCF Lesson 3: - negative numbers - opposites - the sets N and Z - order of operations with negative numbers Lesson 4: - operators: unary and binary operators - commutative property of an operator - associative property of an operator - distributive property - order of operations with parenthesis and negative numbers Lesson 5: - reciprocals - set Q - fractions - operations with fractions Lesson 6: - order of operations with fractions - stacked fractions - use of LCM and GCF in operations with fractions Lesson 7: - simplifying expressions with fractions - simplifying expressions with fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers - simplifying expressions with parentheses, stacked fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers Lesson 8: - mixed review Lesson 9: - ratios and proportions - fundamental property of proportions - word problems with ratios and proportions Lesson 10: - units of measurement - dimensional analysis - word problems with measurement Lesson 11: - percents - word problems with percents Lesson 12: - absolute values - equalities, identities, and inequalities - Cartesian co-ordinates - plotting a point in Cartesian co-ordinates Lesson 13: - integer exponents - simplifying expressions with integer exponents - order of operations with exponents, parentheses, fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers Lesson 14: - data interpretation - probability Lesson 15: - patterns and sequences - repeating decimals Lesson 16: - mixed review

Goods of the Mind was founded in 2007 as a provider of online competitive math classes. Since 2007, we have trained students who wish to participate in mathematics competitions from elementary grades to high school. Each year, many of our students qualify for the American Invitational Math Examination while some of them participate in the USAMO.
One of the founders is Mrs. Cleo Borac, who co-authored 11 volumes of the Competitive Mathematics Series, a top seller on amazon.com under 'Math education and training'. Her focus has always been on understanding what motivates students and how progress in problem solving actually occurs. As a result, we can say that we provide not only a lecture, or a tutorial, but a learning experience that is driven by the feedback from participants. We do not only teach, we also coach because we care a lot about what happens at the other end of the wire: what skills we try to develop or improve and how well we manage to do it.
We do not ‘lecture’ and the student does not ‘attend’. Instead, we work together. While other providers may teach the facts of math and science, we are more interested in the effect of our lessons on the students’ ability to create and build. A lecturer, no matter how good, delivers a lecture. We, on the other hand, work with the students through the topic. There is a difference. By working with students we learn a lot about their process, time constraints, goals, and what it takes to help them progress faster. With us, it is about each student.
At Goods of the Mind, we maintain a free repository of over 100 sets of lecture notes and over 400 original problems: www.mathinee.com is a free resource!

Sign up for our next webinar with parents to ask the questions that are important to you about your student's learning. Our webinars are not a sales pitch, but a genuine conversation that aims to share with parents some of our experience with hundreds of students.
Goods of the Mind is run by Cleo Borac, who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Bucharest, Romania, with a M. Sc. in applied physics, Andrei Borac, who graduated magna cum laude from the University of Washington with a degree in computer engineering, and Silviu Borac, a Ph. D. in mathematical physics from the Technical University in Berlin, Germany, former IPhO medalist, currently at Google.
