Welcome to Poetry Power Hour: Explore Formats, Create Poems, and Find Your Voice! This ongoing class invites teens to dive into the exciting world of poetry by exploring a wide variety of poetic forms, from haikus and sonnets to collaboration poems and short author studies. Each week, we’ll focus on a new style, technique, or theme to inspire creativity and help learners hone their writing skills. In this class, I combine guided instruction with hands-on practice. We'll start each session with a brief introduction to the week's poetic form or technique, followed by group discussions to analyze examples of poetry that highlight the topic. Afterward, learners will have time to craft their own poems using prompts and techniques discussed in class. There will be plenty of opportunities for learners to share their work, give and receive constructive feedback, and reflect on their writing journey. Sharing is encouraged but never required, allowing each learner to participate at their own comfort level. This class is perfect for teens who want to experiment with different styles of poetry, improve their writing, and find their unique voice. Join us to unlock your creativity and connect with other young poets in a supportive and engaging environment! 🗓️Weekly Topics Week of January 13: “I Am” and “Where I Am From” pomes Week of January 20: Haikus and Rengas Week of January 27: 5 Senses and Riddle Poems Week of February 3: Grocery Store Poems Week of February 10: Found Poems and Blackout Poetry Week of February 17: Langston Hughes Author Study Week of February 24: Five Senses and Riddle Poems Week of March 3: Two-Sided Poems Week of March 10: No Class Week of March 17: Chance Poems and Roll-the-Dice Poems Week of March 24: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words (using pictures as inspiration for poem-writing) Week of March 31: Odes Week of April 7: Collaborative Poems Week of April 14: Sonnets Week of April 21: Robert Frost Author Study *more dates to be added later!

I have been teaching literature and writing to teens for over 25 years. I hold Bachelor’s Degrees in English, Writing, and Secondary Education, as well as a current teaching license. In 2005, I earned a Master’s Degree in Education and continue to take professional development courses annually to refine my teaching practices and stay current with educational trends and new teaching methods. Alongside my work with pre-teens and teens, I am also an English professor at the university level, where I teach writing and literature courses.
My teaching approach focuses on building a strong foundation by breaking the writing process into small, manageable steps. I am super patient and encouraging with my feedback and guidance, ensuring students feel supported and confident as they grow in their writing abilities.
My courses are designed to accommodate all types of learners and abilities, providing a supportive environment where every learner can thrive!
