Students who take the Pirate Geometry class will hone their skills in understanding, identifying, and creating basic geometric figures. Each student will create his/her own project using the basic shapes and following specific instructions (even though each project will turn out very different). This project can potentially serve as a review of the concepts, or an assessment to prove mastery. I'm offering this class because each fall many of my incoming 4th and 5th graders still struggle with this concept. As we move into learning about special kinds of Geometric objects, we use these terms to discuss the characteristics and to categorize the objects. When students don't have a firm grasp of these basic terms, they struggle with Geometry tasks all year long.
