Pen and Ink Poetry Club for teens is a weekly poetry club to gather, collect and share your creative self with others who love to share, explore, write, and create poetry. It will contain two components; a language study, namely figurative language, and a poet study. This class will include word games and interactive activities to practice figurative language, lessons on poets through the ages from around the world, and a study of the different styles of poetry. Students will be asked to review some of the poems of the poets we will learn about, discuss their favorite poems and look at what it is about them that makes them 'sing' (the language, the topics, etc), and write some poetry using different styles, topics, themes and figurative language. Some poets we will study include: Maya Angelou, Henry Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Keating, Allan Ginsberg, Dorothea Mackellar, Emily Dickinson, Percy Shelley, Pablo Neruda, William Shakespeare, Homer, William Butler Yeats, Edgar Allen Poe, Shel Silverstein, Rudyard Kipling, Sapho, Li Bai, Joumana Haddad, Nazim Hikmet, and many, many more... In our sharing session, we pass around ideas and personal experiences of how we write our poems, what fills us up, where do we write the best, what tools we may have used to help our creativity, what inspires us to write, how we navigate blocks (if and when they come) and any other ideas we have found which may help others to tap in to their creative poetical side. You will have a chance to share the poetry you have created using your own personal style, expression and approach through your presentation. This is not competitive nor is it a space of criticism or judgment, it is purely to gather poets around and share our love for words and meanings. This is a class about sharing and lifting others up. It takes a lot of courage to perform or recite a piece of your own work to strangers. I have created this space as a safe space to do so. Weekly session topics: (These topics are a rough guide. If students wish to be independent, this is highly encouraged. If students wish to change a topic one week to something they are more interested in, this is encouraged as well. This guide is meant to bring motivation and challenge as well as fun and creativity.) Week 1 : Similes and Metaphors, Haikus Week 2 : Review and look at free poetry Week 3 : Personification and rhyming poems Week 4 : Hyperboles and sonnets I look forward to seeing you at the next poetry session.

This class will have themes or words based on colors, natural places (beaches, mountains, rivers), textures (wood, velvet, fur), etc.
I ask that the same respect for words and assignments in an actual classroom be respected in this space. This is to ensure all the students feel safe with the writings of the others in the group and as a safe space to share their own writings without prejudice or fear.
수업 자료
Pens, pencils, color pencils, paper, journals....anything the student would like to creatively write their own poetry. Of course, typed work is fine as well. I will not be looking at the work once complete. The students will share aloud to the class.

I am a teacher with 16+ years experience in the classroom. I have worked in groups large and small to help students develop their strengths in creative writing and find their love of writing in doing so.
I have been writing poetry myself for over 30 years and have had some poetry published in poetry journals in the 80's and 90's.
