BUGS! INSECTS! CREEPY CRAWLIES! They're all amazing creatures that share our planet! Did you know that their are more than 200 million insects for each human on the planet! WOW! In this engaging and creative class, students will learn all about creating their own insect hotel. With so many interesting bugs around us, why not create a space just for them. Insects can be very helpful in and around your yard and offering them a place to inhabit is a great way to help the earth and our little exoskeletal friends at the same time. Bug hotels offer a safe hideaway for insects but also allow the creator to use pieces of nature and recyclable materials to create them. In this 2-part class your student will be exposed to various subjects that will help them to create their own hotel. Through discussion and shared materials, student will discuss architecture, shape, symmetry, science and nature. Class specifics and a general outline are listed below. Through lots of conversation, engaging questions, pictures and peer interaction, students will be given all the tools and resources they need to build and create their special insect hotel. The teacher will help prepare each student for success and is available throughout the process to offer additional guidance and suggestions to ensure the student's experience is one they will enjoy. Class Part 1: * Learn about what an insect hotel is * Why are they important? * How can they help insects? How can they help us? * Discuss materials that can be used * Show and share examples of insect hotels for inspiration * Homework after class #: Sketch your plans for your Insect hotel and share them with the teacher prior to the second class session. : Gather additional materials you might need to complete your Insect hotel. Class Part 2: * Come to class prepared to construct your insect house both independently and with the guidance of peers and the teacher using the materials you have collected (a list of possible materials will be provided by the teacher). * Work through the building process, share ideas and suggestions for proper construction * Share finished products and discuss the process. Use critical thinking skills and public speaking to gain a better understanding of sharing your work, giving attention to pertinent questions (how did it go? what was challenging? what did you enjoy most? how will you use your creation?) Students will complete class with a finished product that they can be proud of and share with family and friends. Student will also receive a small certificate of completion that shows their Insect Hotel Architecture accomplishment! I can't wait to meet your child and help them through this fun and exciting project, just in time for the cooler months, when insects need a safe place to live.

Hello & welcome to Outschool! My name is Suzi and I'm excited to share a bit about myself.
I am a former elementary school teacher turned homeschooling mom. I have a background in Literacy education and find joy in teaching new things and helping students discover their interests through content and instruction. I think it's important to engage students through storytelling, example and hands on experiences.
As a teacher, I've taught everything from pre-school through high school grades and across all content areas. My favorite subjects to teach are history and math and I have a serious love of language and how to use it, whether it be through writing, speaking or problem solving.
My family and I live in Wisconsin. We have 3 children and 3 dogs and are originally from the East Coast...but are starting to realize we're destined to be midwesterners! My oldest is in her first year at The United States Military Academy at West Point, my middle is a junior in high school and my youngest is a freshman. I hope to see you in class soon!
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or suggestions you might have for classes. I love teaching with Outschool and can't wait to meet your student.
Thank you,
Miss Suzi
