In this class, students will learn how to answer comma questions on the SAT. Not every comma rule in existence is tested on the SAT, so we'll combine a few specific rules and work on the 4 basic uses students need to know to get the comma questions right. We'll also look at when NOT to use a comma, which will help students answer the questions. 

We'll spend some time looking at different kinds of "non-essential descriptive phrases," so students will learn what makes a phrase "essential" or "non-essential." 

Commas are one punctuation mark tested in the Sentence Boundary category on the SAT, and other punctuation marks will appear in comma questions. Because the commas appear in so many questions, this class focuses ONLY on the comma rules. A Sentence Boundary question class is on the way, as well, in which I'll cover semicolons, dashes, colons, periods, question marks, and quotation marks. I'll cover apostrophes in another class on possessive structures. 

Students will take turns reading slides that include the rules, explanations, examples, mnemonic devices, and more. We'll answer SAT-style comma questions, too. For homework, I encourage students to practice with questions from the College Board Question Bank, available on the College Board website. 

Instruction consists of teacher-made instructional material including slide presentations with original questions modeled after the College Board's questions. Additionally, I highly recommend that students purchase this book for homework practice: The Critical Reader: The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar by Erica L. Meltzer. It has a lot of practice for each question type. The student will also use the College Board Question Bank for practice. 

In order to see a score increase, it's essential that students not only attend the session but also continue to practice after the class, take practice tests, and, if necessary, study vocabulary on their own.
